Almost eight years after his death by suicide, a petition has been launched to prevent the closure of Lil Peep’s final venue. And the petition has been started by none other than the rapper's mother, Liza Womack. The venue, The Rock, where Lil Peep performed his final act, is under the management of a realty firm, Ascent Property Company. The company plans to redevelop the Arizona spot into a five-story residential complex. As reported on the @nojumper handle on X (formerly known as Twitter), Womack's petition has already garnered over 13,000 signatures since its launch. In an emotionally laden preface of the petition, Womack writes,“The Rock, a beloved music venue in Tucson, holds a special place in not just the city's music history, but also in my heart. Tragically, my son was set to play at The Rock when he passed away on his tour bus right outside in 2017. Ever since, a memorial, lovingly created and maintained by his fans, stands as a testament to his legacy, his dreams, and the impact he had on so many lives.”Lil Peep with his mother Liza Womack (Image via X/@nojumper)In a tragic turn of events, Peep (Gustav Elijah Åhr) overdosed and died on November 16, 2017, weeks before his 21st birthday, outside his tour bus hours before a show. His memorial outside The Rock continues to be visited by fans to this day. What happened to Lil Peep?Hailed by many as the frontrunner of the 'SoundCloud rapper' aesthetic, Åhr was known for his distinct hard-hitting numbers, which were a unique blend of emo-rock hooks and trap-inspired rhythms.Peep at the Milan Men's Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2018 (Image via Getty)Known for his self-produced tracks like Crybaby and Hellboy, Lil Peep referenced heavy drug use in his music, mostly referencing his own self-medicating habits. Moreover, his severe bouts of depression and mood swings greatly influenced his young fanbase, who were mainly inculcated online via SoundCloud and Instagram.Acknowledging his mental struggles, Åhr revealed the following to Pitchfork in 2017,“I suffer from depression and some days I wake up and I’m like, 'F*ck, I wish I didn’t wake up'. That's the side of myself that I express through music. That's my channel for letting all that sh*t out.”Having made beats since high school, Peep always maintained a close bond with his mother, often expressing that connection through his music and social media posts.
