Moon Jae-in left office as President of South Korea in May 2022. After leaving office, the former President operated Pyeongsan Bookstore in Habuk-myeon, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. He gives book recommendations on his social media channel and also participates in various book talks and literary events.
The former South Korean president made his debut as a YouTuber by appearing on the bookstore's YouTube channel that he operates. On November 17, the YouTube channel Pyeongsan Bookstore uploaded a video titled Children Who Become Poets and Their First Summer in Wanju.
The Pyeongsan Bookstore Foundation founded the channel, and it was produced by Geomjeom Broadcasting Station, operated by Kim Ou-Joon. In the video, Moon can be seen walking into Pyeongsan Bookstore with former Cheong Wa Dae Protocol Secretary Tak Hyun-min. Tak is currently a special appointment professor at Mokpo National University.
He then greets residents and shells sunflower seeds in the bookstore's front yard. The former president gave book recommendations to viewers and recommended titles such as Now, I Go Home and I'll Be By Your Side.
News of Moon Jae-in's YouTube video was first announced by Tak Hyun-min during a radio interview. Tak said:
"I am currently preparing a YouTube program where former President Moon and I will introduce books together. We plan to feature about one or two books each week."
Tak highlighted that he will serve as the host, while Moon selects and introduces books from Pyeongsan Bookstore.
More about Moon Jae-in's Presidential term
Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in served as the 12th president of South Korea from 2017 to 2022. He was a member of the Democratic Party of Korea.
After finishing a five-year presidential term, Moon left office in May 2022 and was succeeded by Yoon Suk Yeol. In May 2024, he published a memoir titled From the Periphery to the Center, which discussed the controversies related to his presidency. Moon's presidential term gained backlash for several reasons. Real-estate prices in Seoul skyrocketed during his presidency. His term was also accused of economic mismanagement since minimum wage increases were considered too swift, hurting many small businesses.
He was also criticized for his diplomatic relations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un after the two were photographed in summits, shaking hands and posing for photos.
Before being elected as President, Moon Jae-in lived with several rescued dogs and cats, along with his wife, Kim Jung-sook, and their two children, a daughter and a son, Moon Joon-yong.
