Luke Nichols, the man behind the Outdoor Boys YouTube channel, has shared that he is taking a break. In a video titled Goodbye, posted on May 17, 2025, Nichols told his fans that this would be his last video for now.
Outdoor Boys has 14.8 million subscribers, and the channel has been around for several years. The channel is popular because it features fun outdoor adventures, where Luke and his family go camping, fishing, and hiking, besides other activities. Fans also love how real and simple the videos are.
In the video, Luke said he has been making videos for 11 years, recalling how he started his journey with a channel called Catfish and Carp. Later, he created Outdoor Boys with his wife and three sons.
He said he has made over 1,100 videos, but now he feels it is time to stop for a while. He also said how he spent many nights editing videos. At times, he filmed even when he was sick or even hurt. He called the YouTube journey a “wild ride” but said he now wants to do something different.
The start of Outdoor Boys
Luke and his wife Rebecca started their channel Outdoor Boys in May 2015, with their three sons. From the start, the videos were all about outdoor fun activities, where the family went camping, fishing, hiking, and survival tasks. Over time, the kids started helping more in the videos. Luke’s oldest son, Tom, became a big part of the channel. He now has his own channel called Outdoor Tom. Luke said he is proud of Tom and wants to help him more.
Luke also said that all three of his sons want to be YouTubers, and he wants to support them. He said he wants to help Tom's channel grow and also ready him for adult life. That is why he wants to focus more on helping his kids, than his own channel.
“I want to spend more time helping him with his channel and preparing him to be an adult, which is going to be in less than six years. But I've spent so much time focusing on me,” he said.
Why Outdoor Boys' Luke Nichols is stepping away from YouTube
In the goodbye video, Luke said:
“This is going to be my last video for a little while.”
He said YouTube has been a big part of his life, but now he feels it is time to take a break. He said he wants to do other things and help others. He shared bits and pieces of his journey in his last video. He recalled how he once went camping with pneumonia. Another time, he built a log cabin while he was injured. These stories showed how much he gave to the channel.
Luke also said that he has many half-finished videos. These include trips, building projects, and fun ideas he started but didn’t finish. He said,
"But if I decide to finish those videos or if I decide to film any other adventures after today, I'll post them at the end of the year all in one big dump. But no matter what, this is going to be my last video for a while."
For now, Luke is choosing to focus on what matters most to him and that is his family. He said he will help his kids, spend more time with them, and maybe help others too. He did not say if he will return, but he said he is proud of what he built. With over 1,100 videos, Luke and his family gave their fans a lot of great memories.
