Selena Gomez, singer, actor and founder of Rare Beauty revealed that she has developed arthritis in her fingers as a complication of lupus, a condition she was first diagnosed with in 2013. While she publicly shared her lupus battle years ago, she opened up about the arthritis diagnosis only recently.

Selena Gomez was a guest on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast on September 9, 2025, where she told the host that the arthritis was an outcome of her lupus and primarily affects her fingers. She told us how it has changed her everyday life especially in mobility and hands aching.

“I have arthritis in my fingers, and that’s due to my lupus,” Gomez said during the interview.

It is not only that this health journey has shaped her personal experiences, but it has also impacted her decisions as the founder of Rare Beauty. Selena Gomez pointed out that the arthritis problems caused her to concentrate on designing easy to carry product packaging, as people might experience the same problem.

Selena Gomez indicated that her fingers have arthritis that makes them painful and dextrous. She could not perform simple functions like opening a bottle, or working with a package without the support of the proper medication. This provided her with an insight into the additional challenges of people with chronic conditions in their everyday life.

She said, “Before I was on the right medication, I couldn’t even open a bottle sometimes.”

Her artistic career also forced her to change. She said that the length of time she rehearses and long hours that she uses her hands at times resulted in some discomfort. Soon, controlling her health became a significant aspect to her career in music, acting and business.

Talking publicly about her arthritis, Selena Gomez has demonstrated how lupus complications go beyond what most individuals could anticipate. It gives emphasis to the continuous struggles with autoimmune diseases, several years after first diagnosis.

“People think it’s just tiredness, but it can be much more. Arthritis was something I didn’t see coming,” she shared.

Her struggle to deal with arthritis influenced the design of the Rare Beauty products directly. Gomez said that she had the desire to make the packaging easy to open by individuals with dexterity challenges or low strength.

Selena Gomez explained, “I thought about people who might have the same issues, and I said, let’s make this easy to open.”

This objective has been included in the mission of the brand aimed at addressing inclusivity.

She told us that her team was busy on details including cap design, grip, and general ease of use. These were minor adjustments that could make her products accessible, which Gomez said was inspired by her own experience with arthritis.

Selena Gomez has identified her business decisions as a way to tie her health struggles to her business, thus making Rare Beauty more than a makeup line.

“I wanted Rare Beauty to be for everyone, not just people who find makeup easy to use,” she said on the podcast.

By doing so, it has already turned into a brand that takes into account individuals who might feel neglected when it comes to the design of beauty products.
