Roblox CEO David Baszucki is under increasing pressure after a Change.org petition requesting his resignation garnered 100,000 signatures in only one week. The petition, established on August 9, 2025, accuses the platform’s leadership of failing to effectively protect children on the platform. It has also sparked debate over accountability, moderation, and corporate responsibility in online gaming.

The petition was started by a user under the username MrMhGaming. It came immediately after Roblox sent a cease-and-desist letter to prominent YouTuber Schlep, a 22-year-old creator who confronts accused pedophiles on the platform’s servers. Schlep, who had gained a following by exposing those accused of predatory behavior, was removed from the app.

According to the platform, the actions taken by the YouTuber Schlep were considered “vigilantism.” It also claimed that the YouTuber’s tactics engaged in “simulated child endangerment conversations” and encouraged users to move chats off-platform. However, this was seen as wrong by fans. They viewed Schlep as someone attempting to safeguard children while the company was taking its own sweet time to remove predators.

The petition accuses Roblox, led by Baszucki, of being slow to remove predators from the game despite multiple complaints, allowing harmful or exploitative content to circulate unchecked. It also claims that the platform relied heavily on automatic moderating tools that punished innocent players and ignored calls for reform. The company allegedly retaliated against community members and whistleblowers who reported safety issues and failed to be transparent when dealing with safety failures. The statement in the petition reads:

"Children are being exploited and exposed to dangerous content, all while Roblox’s executive leadership turns a blind eye. If nothing changes, this pattern of negligence will continue — and more children will be hurt. This is not just about poor leadership. This is about child safety."

The controversy has now intensified with the host of To Catch a Predator, Chris Hansen, tweeting on August 15, 2025. He revealed that he was investigating “exploitation of children on the popular gaming platform, Roblox.” He also confirmed that he had been in contact with the police and the 22-year-old YouTuber Schlep.

Meanwhile, the platform’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, supported the company’s decision to remove Schlep, claiming that vigilante acts placed the community at “greater risk.”

The State of Louisiana has also filed a lawsuit against the platform over similar child safety issues, raising fears about the company’s legal problems.

The co-founder and CEO of the online game platform and game creation system, David Baszucki, was born in Canada but raised in Minnesota. He attended Stanford University to study electrical engineering and computer science. Before starting the platform, he co-founded Knowledge Revolution along with his brother Greg and Erik Cassel. The company developed educational physics software, which MSC Software eventually acquired.

He then went on to co-found the platform with Erik Cassel in 2004, which was released to the public in 2006. Cassel, who served as administrator and former VP of Engineering at Roblox, passed away from cancer in February 2013. The platform has since grown from its early days into one of the most famous and profitable platforms, with millions of daily active users.

David Baszucki and his wife, Jan Ellison Baszucki, are philanthropists and digital entrepreneurs. They sponsor research in neuroscience, metabolic health, democracy, and astronomy through their foundation, the Baszucki Group. The couple have four children and reside in the San Francisco Bay Area.

With the platform going public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021, Baszucki became a millionaire. He also established himself as a gaming industry leader alongside names like Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, and many more.

As of now, Roblox or Baszucki has not issued a specific response directly addressing the petition or the backlash they are currently facing.
