Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has reportedly died at the age of 84.

The BBC has reported that Cheney, who also served as President Gerald Ford's White House chief of staff in the 1970s, succumbed to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease on Monday night, November 3. His family confirmed his demise in a statement.

The spotlight now turns to his wife, Lynne Cheney, an author, scholar, and former talk show host. She became the second lady of the U.S. when her husband became the 46th Vice President in 2001. He finished his term in 2009.

She is the founder of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a think tank that rallies towards bettering higher education. She also serves as a senior fellow in education and culture at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research and the director of Reader's Digest Association, Inc.

During her stint as second lady, she repeatedly voiced dissent for the use of explicit language in music, including that of Eminem's. She was also known for opposing a constitutional amendment that prohibited same-sex marriage, and she and her husband were vocal advocates for the same.

Dick Cheney's life and legacy explored:

In a statement announcing Dick Cheney's demise, his family reportedly said:

"Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. The former vice president died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming's Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States."

The statement continues,

"Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honour, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man."

He played a key role in President George W Bush’s "war on terror," including the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Having spent a decade in the House of Representatives, Cheney went on to become a vocal critic of the Republican Party helmed by President Trump.

Ahead of the US presidential election last year, despite being an ardent conservative, he famously backed former Vice President Kamala Harris. At the time, he said there had

"never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump", adding: "He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him."

CNN has reported that Cheney struggled with cardiovascular disease for years, having survived a string of heart attacks. He underwent a heart transplant in 2012, which, according to CNN, he said in 2014 was “the gift of life itself.”
