American non-profit organisation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), has reportedly decided to cease operations after almost six decades. According to a report by 9News, the CPB helped in funding many local stations, along with NPR and PBS. In a press release published on the official website, CPB CEO Patricia Harrison said:

“For more than half a century, CPB existed to ensure that all Americans - regardless of geography, income, or background - had access to trusted news, educational programming, and local storytelling. When the Administration and Congress rescinded federal funding, our Board faced a profound responsibility: CPB’s final act would be to protect the integrity of the public media system and the democratic values by dissolving, rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks.”

The decision comes after the directors voted for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s closure. So far, the corporation received funding from Congress, but it has announced the rescission of the funding. One of the Board’s directors, Ruby Calvert, said:

“What has happened to public media is devastating. After nearly six decades of innovative, educational public television and radio service, Congress eliminated all funding for CPB, leaving the Board with no way to continue the organization or support the public media system that depends on it. Yet, even in this moment, I am convinced that public media will survive, and that a new Congress will address public media’s role in our country because it is critical to our children's education, our history, culture and democracy to do so.”

How did netizens react to the shutdown of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting?

According to the press release, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting board members realized that sustaining the corporation without resources would only mean that they would be a dormant CPB. It would also not be in the best interest of the public. Speaking about the role of public media, Patricia Harrison also said:

“Public media remains essential to a healthy democracy. Our hope is that future leaders and generations will recognize its value, defend its independence, and continue the work of ensuring that trustworthy, educational, and community-centered media remains accessible to all Americans.”

Social media users shared their reactions about the closure of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. One X user commented:

“Thank you PBS for your contributions to my childhood.”

Another netizen asked:

“So …. where can the children get their free educational cartoons now ?”

Reminiscing about childhood days, an online commentator wrote:

“So much of our childhood is now gone. So many mornings before school and during sick days gone. We will miss you.”

From 1993 to 1993, TV presenter Bill Nye’s show Bill Nye the Science Guy aired on PBS. During a conversation with CNN in August 2025, Nye said that his show had served to educate children about elementary science. He said that with the curtailment of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, rural communities that voted for the administration will be affected. Nye said that he encountered many people who said they learned English by watching public broadcasting.
