The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned popular Kannywood singer Hamisu Breaker, who is a rising star in Northern Nigeria, and TikTok influencer Abubakar Ibrahim, also known as G Fresh, to the Federal High Court in Kano. The two will be presented before Justice Sale Musa Shuaibu for charges related to naira abuse.

Both parties pleaded guilty to the charges, essentially disrespecting the Nigerian currency, and have been sentenced to five months imprisonment, or they could pay a ₦200,000 fine each. Individually, Hamisu Breaker was convicted for spraying ₦30,000 in ₦200 notes during a social event in Hadejia, Jigawa State. G Fresh was found spraying bundles of ₦1,000 notes at the opening of a shop in the Tarauni area of Kano State.

According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, under Section 21 of the CBN Act, 2007, acts of Naira abuse are punishable by imprisonment for a term of not less than six months or a fine of not less than ₦50,000 or both. Abusive practices include

  • Spraying of, dancing or matching/stepping on the Naira
  • Selling or trading Naira notes/coins
  • Mutilation, defacement, soiling

This is not the first time that the EFCC has shown strictness and diligence when it comes to naira abuse, as earlier it was reported that E-Money, who is the younger brother of Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, aka KCee, was also arrested at his home in Omole, Lagos, after he allegedly abused the naira. Emeka Okonkwo, aka E-Money, who is a Nigerian socialite, allegedly exchanged US dollars, an act said to go against the Foreign Exchange Act.
