Puerto Rican artist Jhayco has been arrested on drug charges.
NBC Miami has reported that the rapper, known for his collaborations with Bad Bunny, was cuffed in Miami-Dade County early Tuesday, as seen in jail records. Legally known as Jesus Manuel Nieves Cortes, he is most known for his chart-topping hit DÁKITI.
He is reportedly a budding artist in the world of Latin trap and reggaeton, born and raised in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Also a songwriter and producer, Jhayco also co-wrote several tracks for heavyweights, including I Like It with Cardi B, No Me Conoce (Remix), and more for Bad Bunny. He boasts multi-platinum certifications and a Latin Grammy.
Here's everything we know about Jhayco's arrest:
Jhayco was allegedly driving a Corvette that was doing 5 mph on Southwest 8th Street in the early hours of the day, his arrest report states. When his car came to a halt and didn't move for some time, officers approached him. It was then that they "smelled the strong odor of cannabis" and saw that the driver had "white powder on his pants and white powder on his nose."
He could not produce his driver's license and was subsequently asked to step out of the car, which is when it was revealed that there was no license with his name. The Independent has reported that authorities discovered two black pouches at the back of his car, with seven grams of what seemed to be cannabis in each. They also noticed cocaine in his pockets, amounting to a total of two grams.
According to The Latin Times, he was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center at around 4:24 a.m. and now faces charges of cocaine possession and cannabis possession. His bond was reportedly set at $3,000. Deputies also confirmed that Jhayco made some erratic statements, though there is no further word yet on the same.
The 32-year-old artist made his debut in 2019 with the album Famouz, which went on to peak at No. 5 on the Top Latin Albums chart. His most recent work came in September last year, titled Le Clique: Vida Rockstar (X). He recorded the same across various cities and countries, including Miami, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, and Paris.
As of this writing, there is no further information available about his arrest, and Jhayco has yet to issue a comment himself.
