Mitt Romney's sister-in-law, Carrie Elizabeth Romney, died at 64 on October 10, casting the spotlight on his wife, Ann Romney.
Carrie's body was reportedly discovered near a parking garage at the Valencia Town Centre shopping mall. Authorities have confirmed there were no signs of foul play yet, though an autopsy of her body was underway.
Mitt Romney, the former presidential candidate, tied the knot with Ann in March 1969 in a civil ceremony in Bloomfield Hills. They had their Mormon ceremony in Utah shortly after. They have since welcomed five kids: Taggart, born in 1970; Matthew, born in 1971; Joshua, born in 1975; Benjamin, 1978; and Craig, 1981.
His brother, George Scott Romney, was married to Carrie. However, the Daily Mail has reported that they separated earlier this year.
Everything we know about Mitt Romney's sister-in-law's demise:
As reported by the Daily Mail, the Utah senator said that he was "heartbroken" to learn of Carrie's demise.
'Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time,' Mitt Romney said.
The outlet confirmed that Mitt Romney's brother, George, and Carrie separated in May this year. The former, who goes by the name Scott, filed for divorce in June after eight years of marriage. It was his third wedding, and they didn't share any kids. They reportedly kept their relationship under wraps and were never photographed together in public.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s representative said in a statement:
"Law enforcement responded at about 8:30 pm (local time) in the 24500 block of Town Center Drive in a Valencia parking garage. A woman 'jumped or fell' from the parking structure."
Carrie Romney's place of death is reportedly listed as "street," while the cause of death is listed as "deferred." The status of her body is "ready for release." LA County Sheriff's spokesman Lieutenant Daniel Vizcarra told the Daily Mail in a statement:
'We don't know if it was suicide or accidental. There is not enough information to go by yet on what the coroner has given us so far.' He also said that a passerby called 911, adding, "foul play has not been ruled out, but as of right now, there is no evidence of it."
Per the Daily Mail, in his divorce filing, Scott cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Carrie was reportedly pushing for spousal support, which the former was contesting. She also requested to adopt her maiden name, Carrie Elizabeth Dimas.
