The co-founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, is opening up about how he plans to divide his estate between his 106 children.
The 40-year-old spoke to the French outlet Le Point for an interview about the division of his fortune. Forbes has reported that his net worth is about $17.1 billion.
People Magazine has reported that the mogul fathers six kids via natural conception with three different partners, though he has served as a sperm donor for over 100 children across 12 countries.
The Russian-born tech entrepreneur, once nicknamed the “Russian Zuckerberg," is a known advocate for confidentiality online and end-to-end encryption in text messaging. He is well-known for refusing the moderation of messages on his platform, which allows its users to share content on channels that virtually anyone can follow.
He graduated from the University of St Petersburg, and by 2006, he launched VK. However, he later resigned, before launching Telegram with his brother, Nikolai, in 2013. The Guardian has reported that the app is now popular among pro-democracy protesters worldwide.
Pavel Durov's legal struggles explored:
In his interview with the French political magazine, Pavel Durov said:
"I want to specify that I make no difference between my children: There are those who were conceived naturally and those who come from my sperm donations. They are all my children and will all have the same rights! I don't want them to tear each other apart after my death."
He revealed that the clinic, "where I started donating sperm fifteen years ago to help a friend, told me that more than 100 babies had been conceived this way in 12 countries." However, he did iterate that his offspring would not be able to access their inheritance for another 3 decades:
"I want them to live like normal people, to build themselves up alone, to learn to trust themselves, to be able to create, not to be dependent on a bank account," he said.
He has already penned a will because his job "involves risks – defending freedoms earns you many enemies, including within powerful states".
Elsewhere in the interview, Pavel Durov revealed that he follows a strict workout regimen that sees him do 300 push-ups and 300 squats. He also revealed that he steers clear of alcohol, coffee or tea, sugar, and cigarettes.
Last year, Pavel Durov was arrested by the French authorities because his app was allegedly being used for criminal purposes, including the distribution of child s*xual abuse material, cyberbullying, and organised crime, among other things. However, he has categorically maintained his innocence.
He told Le Point that the charges are simply "absurd."
"Just because criminals use our messaging service among many others doesn't make those who run it criminals," he said. He went on: "Nothing has ever been proven showing that I am, even for a second, guilty of anything."
The Guardian has reported that investigations into the matter have since been handed over to the cyber unit of the French gendarmerie and the national anti-fraud office.
Pavel Durov currently stays in Dubai, where is platform is based. He boasts a dual citizenship of France and the UAE. NBC News has reported that Telegram has also asserted that it relies on an array of content moderation techniques to circumvent the propagation of illicit behavior.
