Who is Rob Markman?
American music journalist, media executive, and rapper Rob Markman is best known for his work in hip-hop journalism and as a Vice President of Content Strategy at Genius. He is also an independent recording artist and has released several music projects since 2017. Markman attended Hunter College, where he studied Media Studies.
He began his journalism career by writing for prominent hip-hop publications including The Source, Vibe, and XXL. He later joined MTV News as a Senior Hip-Hop editor.
He is also known for extensive reviews of rap track lyrics. In November 2024, Rob Markman, while discussing legal filings against Universal Music Group, revealed that Drake's OVO team approached him. Drake's team allegedly reached out to him at some point during the rapper's feud with Kendrick Lamar and requested the journalist to share positive thoughts about the rapper.
"I was approached during the battle by a team connected with the OVO side. (They) asked me to show the boy some love. Again, I was being as unbiased as possible. I was calling it like I see it, but they asked me, 'Yo, we know you're unbiased.' Really said it, 'We know you're unbiased and we liked that you're unbiased and really try to call it straight but can you show the guy some love."
Markman mentioned that while OVO didn't offer any money in return, they offered "some information, some access." Markman quoted the OVO team and said,
"Yo, and we'll make it so that you can play his songs in your videos. We'll whitelist it."
However, Markman mentioned that he ultimately declined the offer for his "own personal reasons."
