Former NFL running back Doug Martin was in police custody following a break-in at a home on Ettrick Street near the Oakland Zoo, as per ABC 7 News. Martin died early Saturday morning at 36 at a hospital while he was under police custody.

The cause of death is yet to be reported, and the incident is under investigation by multiple local law enforcement agencies. His family released a statement to Fox News announcing his death and said,

"It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently uninformed. Please respect our privacy at this time."

As per the East Bay Times, multiple sources close to the investigation reported that local police responded to a reported home break-in at 4:15 am in East Oakland, when, after a "brief struggle," Martin became unresponsive after he was taken into custody. Martin was then transported to a hospital, where he later died.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom Doug Martin played for from 2012 to 2017, issued a statement on Martin's death on Sunday afternoon saying,

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. From his record-setting rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise."

They went on to add,

"He was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa bay and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life."

Doug Martin, or Douglas Matthewbaran Martin, was an American professional football player who played as a running back for seven seasons in the National Football League. Martin played for the Florida-based Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012 to 2017 and with the Oakland Raiders in 2018. Martin was chosen as a running back by the Buccaneers in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Before becoming a part of the NFL, Martin attended Boise State University from 2007 to 2011 and played for the Boise State Broncos. While playing for the Buccaneers, Martin made the Pro Bowl and the NFL All-Rookie Team after a 1,454-yard and 11-touchdown season. However, injuries affected most of his career with Tampa Bay.
