The late Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled was known as the 'Sleeping Prince' after his accident 20 years ago, which left him in a comatose state since 2005. Prince Al-Waleed belonged to one of the richest royal families in Saudi Arabia. He was the nephew of Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, a House of Saud royal, billionaire, businessman, and investor. Prince Al-Waleed passed away at the age of 36.
The accident dates back to 2005, when Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled was preparing for military service. He was 15 years old when he was studying in a military college in London. He got in a lethal car crash that left him in a comatose state due to critical brain injuries and internal bleeding.
Despite the efforts from both American and Spanish doctors to bring him back to a conscious state, they were unsuccessful. After being treated in London, the prince was brought back to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh till he passed away.
Who broke the news of Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled's passing?
The news of Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled's death was announced by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, on July 19, 2025. He took to X to break the news of his first son's passing.
He started with a quote from the Quran that reads:
"O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], and enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise."
Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud then wrote:
"With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today."
He also announced that the funeral prayer for Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled will be held on July 20, 2025. It will be at a separate location for men and women. For men, it will be held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque after the Asr prayer. As for women, the funeral prayer will be at King Faisal Specialist Hospital after the Dhuhr prayer.
A condolence gathering will also be held at separate locations for both men and women. It will be held for three days on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, after the Maghrib prayer. The condolence gathering location for men will be at Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal’s Palace in Al-Fakhariya. For women, it will be held at Al-Fakhariya Palace, Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz’s Palace.
