K-pop Girl group TripleS' Xinyu is under fire for sharing her political opinions.
Xinyu, who is part of the 24-member multinational girl group formed by Modhaus, is now under fire for sharing her political opinions. The singer, whose real name is Zhōu Xīnyǔ, is of Chinese origin and just showcased her strong support for the One China principle.
Fans and netizens share thoughts on the controversial statements made by the TripleS' member
On their fan communication channel, Fromm, she declared,
“Macau has always been a part of China, so are Hong Kong and Taiwan.”
The comments immediately caused controversy amongst fans. While some fans were calling her out for her opinions, others were quick to warn her for her behaviour and told her to be more careful.
However, Xinyu was quick to double down on her thoughts and stated,
"What did I say wrong? If you disagree, don’t pick me as your bias on Fromm.”
Though it was commendable how she asserted her views, her tone intensified the public backlash.
Another translation of her words is, "I'm not that strict. I mean, Macao is actually part of China. So is Hong Kong and Taiwan. Why, do you think I'll get a scolding for saying this? Did I say something wrong? If you don't agree with me, don't subscribe to my fromm."
Netzines reacted to the 15th member of TripleS' comments with responses such as,
"I guess she wants to quit being an idol in Korea soon. She's already building up her image for a career in China."
"So many Chinese idols are ignorant about what political statements are acceptable in Korea. It just goes to show how much they look down on Korea and Koreans."
"She's gonna book it out of tripleS the moment she gets a solid offer from a Chinese agency."
“Must be miserable not having fans… Do you think the Chinese members in top idol groups think any differently? They post about ‘One China’ on SNS and still promote just fine.”
“Which company is tripleS from again?”
Political sensitivity in Kpop
Sharing political views, whether by Korean-origin idols or foreigners, is quite a taboo in the industry as it often leads to backlash or criticisms from people who oppose the opinions. Idols are taught to behave in a certain way during elections so as not to show support for a political party, even by mistake. Specific colors and gestures are avoided during the time period.
The One China principle refers to the policy that the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau constitute a single, unified country under one government. This view is, in fact, officially upheld by the Chinese government; however, globally, there isn't one particular stance.
TripleS' company has not yet responded or released an official statement regarding Xinyu's comments and the subsequent backlash.
