The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 was launched on June 5, 2025, and recently, on June 6, Nintendo Prime, a well-known content creator, took to his X (formerly Twitter) to share that Switch 2 has broken sales records by more than 3 million units in 24 hours.
The new consoles have significant upgrades over the original console, including a bigger and sharper display, more storage, enhanced processing and graphics, and an upgraded dock, among others. The Switch 2 costs $449.99, and launch day saw massive global queues and major buzz, both online and offline.
More on Nintendo's Switch 2 selling over 3 million units
Prime revealed on Friday that the newly launched Switch 2 sold over 3 million units globally in 24 hours. It should be noted that these numbers do not include the weekend sales. This is what Prime said in his post on X:
''I have now heard from 3 independent people that Nintendo have globally shifted over 3m Switch 2 units. This doesn’t include any additional sales made today already and over the upcoming weekend.''
He also mentioned how no console has ever come close to that kind of sales in just 24 hours. He said that previously, the record for making the most sales over a 24-hour launch was held by Sony's PS4 when one million units were sold in 24 hours. He also added:
''The two month total record is around 4.5m units, held by PS5 and PS4. Nintendo is on pace to beat that in less than a week."
"Sales of this magnitude have literally never been seen in console history!''
On the launch day, Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, appeared in an interview on CBS Mornings Plus and reassured viewers about the company having a steady supply of consoles across the globe, as per AP News. He said:
''We have a steady supply of manufacturing that will be coming in, and we believe we’ll be able to meet that demand all the way through the summer, through Father’s Day and then on into the holiday period also.''
He then discussed the impact of U.S. tariffs and stated that the situation is 'very fluid and complex.' He also assured the viewers that the company is looking at different scenarios to keep the pricing as low as possible.
As per Dexerto, the Original Switch, released in 2017, sold 2.74 million units in its first month. Now the newly launched console has sold over 3 million units, outperforming not only its predecessor but every other console that has been launched.
