Elon Musk's satellite internet service Starlink experienced a widespread outage on September 14, 2025, which ignited complaints and online memes.

A message appearing on its website read:

“Starlink is currently experiencing a service outage. Our team is investigating.”

The internet users started facing problems at around 12.35 am ET, and the snag affected over 43,000 to 45,000 users, according to Downdetector. The affected consumers belonged to multiple US states including Seattle, San Francisco, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington, as per a report in The Independent.

Starlink, the satellite internet constellation which is operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, launched its first lot of satellites in 2019, per Britannica. The network is largely used in rural and remote communities.

This is not the first time Starlink has reported an outage, as it faced a similar situation in July 2025. During that time, it apologised to its users for the network issue on its official X account, and assured them that they were working on a solution.

Meanwhile, social media has responded with memes to the current situation. Continue reading to find out more.

Starlink satellite internet service, started by Elon Musk through his aerospace company SpaceX, witnessed an outage on September 14, 2025, across the US, disrupting services to more than 43,000 customers across different states. The causes ranged from internet connectivity problems to a complete blackout.

Multiple users took to the internet to express themselves through a mix of anger and humor. Here is how they reacted to the disruption in internet services.

“Hey @elonmusk, my @Starlink is down,” a user reacted.
“Back up and running for now,” another chimed in.
“#Starlink is down. What’s up @elonmusk?” a third quipped.
“Denmark here, we are driving blind right now !” another user said.
“I’m out here in the woods like,” went a fifth comment.
“Real live footage,” a sixth added.
“Yo @elonmusk, my man. Fix my #starlink. You got the whole world cussing you,” someone else wrote.

A report in Reuters stated that Elon Musk's Starlink outage has now been resolved for most of its customers. Downdetector reported that the number of users experiencing problems has significantly decreased from a peak of more than 43,000. The numbers started to fall down below 1,000 as of 1:15 am ET.

According to a September 15 report in The Independent, over 40% users faced a total internet blackout, whereas 60% complained of having network issues.

Starlink is a low-orbit satellite, designed to provide highspeed internet to its customers. The company reportedly has over 6.2 million global subscribers and more than 2 million active customers in the US alone.

In 2022, several tests reported that the internet service has the potential to deliver internet speed four times faster than average providers, as per a BBC report.

However, in September 2024, it was reported by the outlet that Elon Musk's Starlink satellites are blocking the view of the universe from its electromagnetic radiation for astronomers. Professor Jessica Dempsey, director of ASTRON, said:

“Every time more of these are launched with these kinds of emission levels, we see less and less of the sky. We're trying to look at things like the jets, which are emitted from black holes in the centre of galaxies. We also look at some of the earliest galaxies, millions and millions of light years away, as well as exoplanets.”

There are reportedly 6,402 Starlink satellites orbiting at around 342 miles above Earth right now.
