Former Vice President Kamala Harris has voiced her opinion concerning Jimmy Kimmel’s indefinite suspension from ABC. ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, after the host commented on Charlie Kirk’s killing.
Kamala Harris condemned the decision, calling it “an outright abuse of power.” She added that this was a new tactic by “this administration” to silence the voices of people who want to “speak out.”
“What we are witnessing is an outright abuse of power. This administration is attacking critics and using fear as a weapon to silence anyone who would speak out. Media corporations — from television networks to newspapers — are capitulating to these threats.”
She added that people shouldn't be complacent with the assault on free speech.
“We cannot dare to be silent or complacent in the face of this frontal assault on free speech. We, the People, deserve better.”

Kamala Harris isn't the only person to speak against the decision; a member of the FCC, Anna Gomez, tweeted on X and called it “an inexcusable act of political violence.”
“An inexcusable act of political violence by one disturbed individual must never be exploited as justification for broader censorship and control. This Administration is increasingly using the weight of government power to suppress lawful expression.”
Former President Barack Obama also commented on the issue. Taking to his official X account, Obama described the incident as another way the current administration muzzles reporters it doesn't like.
“After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.”
He also described it as a form of government coercion.
“This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.”
On Monday, September 15, 2025, Jimmy Kimmel made a commentary on the death of political activist Charlie Kirk, who was murdered on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University. According to the TV host, the suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, might have been a pro-Trump republican, and some people are actively trying to present him as anything other than that.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend, with the MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Jimmy Kimmel questioned President Donald Trump's friendship with the late Charlie Kirk, alleging that the president was mourning him like he had lost a “goldfish.”
“In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving. On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism. But on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this,” Kimmel added. “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish, okay?”
