John Legend has opened up about his former friend and collaborator Kanye West in a recent interview that has sparked reactions among fans and enthusiasts online.
Speaking to The Times, John Legend described Kanye West's personal and public "devolution" as "sad" and "sometimes shocking." It has again drawn attention to the rapper's controversial behavior in recent times.
However, some netizens have taken issue with Legend's comments, especially his suggestion that Kanye West's descent began with the passing of his mother, Donda West, in 2007.
Pop Base highlighted a statement of John Legend from The Times interview, which is as follows:
"It does feel sad, sometimes shocking, to see where he is now. [...] I didn't see a hint of what we are seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution. I don’t think we’re qualified to psychoanalyse him, but after his mother passed in 2007 there was definitely a difference. His descent started then and seems to have accelerated recently."
One netizen reacted to this, saying:
"Please stop using Donda as a crutch. That don’t got nothing to do with the hatred in his heart."
Internet reactions to John Legend's comments regarding Kanye West
Multiple X (formerly Twitter) users gathered in the comment section of Pop Base's X post to share their thoughts on Legend's statements. Below are some of the remarks:
"Stop talking about him. This does not help. Keep it in the group chat and give a cute "no comment" damn.", penned a netizen.
"Kanye losing john legend as a friend was the final proof he is not coming back… you don't lose legends by accident", declared another.
"We all know this. Once Dr Donda West died, that was the beginning of his downfall. I read somewhere or seen an interview (don’t rmember) where they said his mom was basically his dr. She kept him on his meds and he only listened to her.", stated a third.
Others also chimed in:
"I do agree that Kanye started to switch once his mom passed …I have my reasoning on that, but I won't put the tinfoil hat on", commented an X user.
"John Legend is speaking with such grace and honesty here. It is heartbreaking to witness someone's unraveling, especially when you knew their light before the darkness. Wishing peace for all involved.", expressed another.
"John Legend has a habit of speaking against other celebrities. In each case, they were big name celebrities and black too. Usually turns out the one pointing fingers has more fingers pointing back. He'll never be as culturally significant as Kanye, flaws included, not to mention the other person he tried to take down whose name we won’t even include in a sentence about John not Legend", penned a third.
John Legend and Kanye West first met in the early 2000s, when Legend was a new singer trying to break into the industry. Kanye West was then gaining ground as a producer after his work on Jay-Z's The Blueprint. Kanye gave Legend his big break.
Ye signed him to his label GOOD Music, and the two worked closely on John Legend's 2004 debut album, Get Lifted.
