President Donald Trump showed up at the Washington Commanders vs. Detroit Lions game, held on November 9. The president arrived on Air Force One. However, his appearance on the big screen was met with boos from the crowd as soon as he started waving at them.
With his arrival, Trump made history as the first sitting U.S. president in almost fifty years to go to a regular NFL game.
Welcoming him, Mark Clouse, president of Commanders, said, according to the Guardian,
"We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country."
TMZ noted that Donald Trump exited before the game came to an end.
Donald Trump gets interviewed during the Commanders' game
Along with waving at the crowd, the president was also interviewed by Fox NFL. Speaking about the game and the players, Trump said:
"They are just fantastic, and you know, our recruitment has been record-setting since a year ago, which was a disaster for the country, and now it's record-setting. So this was an honor to be here."
During the interview, Donald Trump revealed he played tight end in his early days, saying:
"I played tight end, but it was not quite football like this. It was a little bit easier. It wasn't so tough."
Towards the end of the interview, Trump was also asked about the nation and the future plans, to which he said:
"Well, we're doing great, and recruitment is doing phenomenally."
According to ABC, Donald Trump also spoke about the Commanders' future, praising the team's ownership and saying they are building a 'beautiful stadium.' He called Josh Harris a 'wonderful owner' and said fans can expect to see 'some very good things' in the coming years.
In a recent report by ESPN, the president was said to have wanted the Washington Commanders' new stadium named after him. Sharing the reaction, Karoline Leavitt gave a statement to ESPN:
"That would be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible."
Another source close to the outlet said:
"He has cards to play. He can make it very difficult, through government environmental approvals and other things, to make sure everyone who wants this stadium to be built will join to put his name on it. Trump has plenty of cards to play to get his way."
As of now, the Commanders have not confirmed anything about the stadium's name.
