Elon Musk, CEO of X, has banned the use of hashtags in paid advertisements on the social media platform. This news has started a discourse online with many users voicing their opinions on the issue. On June 26, 2026, Musk announced on X that using hashtags on ads, which he described as “esthetic nightmares”, will no longer be allowed on X starting from June 27, 2026:

“Starting tomorrow [Friday], the esthetic nightmare that is hashtags will be banned from ads on X.”

The tech billionaire and former Senior Advisor to the President of the United States didn't make provisions regarding the use of hashtags on other posts. It may be inferred that the provision is only restricted to paid content on X.

Elon Musk has been vocal in his criticism of the hashtag feature on X for quite some time now. In a December 2024 tweet, he implored users to stop using hashtags :

“Please stop using hashtags. The system doesn't need them anymore, and they look ugly.”

Musk’s latest hashtag policy follows several changes that the CEO has made to X, formerly known as Twitter, since he purchased it in 2022. His policies seem to be centered on limiting content moderation and algorithm adjustments.

Fans react as Elon Musk suspends the use of hashtags on paid advertisements on X

Since the tech billionaire announced the latest stipulation on X fans have shared their opinion on the matter. Some have found the change irrelevant.

@TheKingofGuam tweeted:

“What’s the purpose of this change? Seems silly and pointless.”

Others seemed to share the same sentiments:

“Wait, what's the point of that? Why is that such a big deal?” @wideawake724 asked.
“Okay. But why?” @RoqueJerem3125 added.
“This is a bad idea. I know plenty of people who get news and information out by using hashtags. If something goes down and I want to find more info l'll specificly search for those because otherwise x's search feature sucks usually,” @YikesMuhdude explained.

Some netizens supported Elon Musk’s decision to ban hashtags for adverts and labelled the decision as “good change”:

“Honestly, a good change. Keeps ads out of where they shouldn't,” @MorganaTfg expressed.
“This needs to happen. The amount of hate that gets sponsored on this app with hashtags is crazy,” @ThatgirlCale added.
“Elon with another genius idea,” @wyaslqtt praised.
