It’s been about four months since Katy Perry, Lauren Sanchez and four other women took a trip to space, and people are still discussing it. In The Gilded Age panel event on August 11, 2025, Christine Baranski discussed Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez’s controversial Blue Origin space mission and described it as:

"The grotesque displays of wealth, sending women into a spaceship for what?”

She added:

"So they can do their makeup? What the f--k?"

The topic of the Blue Origin space expedition came up as The Gilded Age actress was giving an example about how the hit HBO series exposes viewers to the huge gap between the wealthy and the poor.

“Don’t get me started,” she added.

The occupants of the April 14, 2025, Blue Origin space rocket included Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sanchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn.

A viral clip from the expedition showed the occupants weightless and screaming in wonder as they peered into space. The flight lasted for 11 minutes, and Oprah Winfrey and Jeff Bezos greeted the crew upon returning to earth. Katy Perry kissed the ground when she alighted from the space rocket.

The expedition was followed by heavy backlash from celebrities and Netizens alike. Olivia Munn condemned the space mission ahead of its launch on an appearance on the show Today With Jenna And Friends:

"What are they doing? Like why? You know what I mean?' she said. "I know that this is probably not the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now.''

She added:

"What are you going to do up in space? What are you doing up there?''

Lauren Sanchez, who recently got married to Jeff Bezos, owner of the Blue Origin enterprise, defended her space travel:

"I would love to have them come to Blue Origin and see the thousands of employees that don't just work here but they put their heart and soul into this vehicle," she said of their critics. "They love their work and they love the mission and it's a big deal for them."

Aisha Bowe former rocket scientist who was also amongst the flight crew, responded to insinuations that the flight had no scientific purpose on CBS Mornings. Bowe stated that the trip was done with future research of adaptable crops in mind.
