"The whole frozen thing doesn't make sense": LAPD Captain clarifies details in Celeste Rivas Hernandez case

The Los Angeles Police Department is clarifying key details in the death case of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Earlier this year, her body was found in the trunk of a Tesla that belonged to musician d4vd.

Officials took an initiative this week to correct false reports and explain why the investigation has reached a new stage. It is worth noting that for the first time, a homicide detective has referred to the case as an "investigation into murder." Moreover, a court has issued an order to seal the medical examiner's findings.

Additionally, LAPD Captain Scot Williams has stated to People that reports claiming Celeste Rivas' body was frozen or decapitated, are untrue.

Scot Williams is the commanding officer of the Robbery-Homicide Division. He gave an official statement to People, mentioning:

"Celeste's body was not frozen. She was not decapitated. The whole frozen thing does not even make sense. Her body was in the car for weeks."

He also added:

"Even if she had been frozen solid when she was put in the car (which there is NO evidence to suggest she was), five or more weeks in the trunk of a car in sweltering heat in the middle of summer would not have resulted in a partially frozen body being discovered on September 8th."

Officials confirmed that Celeste Rivas' body had been in the trunk for "weeks." It was not preserved or manipulated in the ways some outlets had reported. Williams claimed that even hypothetically, such claims were not scientifically plausible. His remarks were meant to correct misinformation and prevent public misunderstanding.

Discovery of Celeste's body and the early investigation

Celeste Rivas Hernandez was first reported missing on April 5, 2024, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. Her family had reported her missing multiple times that year. It started on Valentine's Day. Notably, law enforcement records indicate she appeared alongside d4vd online and reportedly lived in a rental home, which is connected to the musician.

Her body was found on September 8, 2025, one day after her 15th birthday. The body was inside a black bag in the trunk of an impounded Tesla, which was registered to d4vd.

The vehicle had been abandoned for weeks on Bluebird Avenue in the Hollywood Hills. It was towed on September 5, 2025. Workers at the yard contacted police after noticing an odor and flies.

Now, in a declaration filed on Friday, LAPD Detective Joshua Byers described the inquiry as an "investigation into murder." Moreover, according to reports, Byers asked a judge to prevent the release of autopsy findings of the Celeste Rivas death case.

It was stated that disclosure of details "will reveal or tend to reveal the ongoing investigation and the integrity of the investigation as well as the identity of witnesses and/or informants who are cooperating with law enforcement."

As the investigation involving d4vd continues, multiple dates on his tour itinerary have been officially cancelled.
