American cable news channel MSNBC is rebranding as MS NOW, which stands for My Source News Opinion World. The announcement was made public on August 18 on the news channel's social media with the statement:
"The new name highlights our mission: to be your trusted source for breaking news and in-depth analysis, while continuing to provide the perspectives you’ve counted on for nearly 30 years."
The decision to change the name comes after the network’s split from Comcast-owned media company NBCUniversal and its separation from NBC News. Other channels that were spun off into the new company Versant include Golf Channel, USA Network, E! Entertainment, CNBC, and Oxygen.
However, it has come as a surprise for viewers, since Versant’s CEO had earlier said the MSNBC name won't change. The new logo of the news channel features a white flag with two red stripes on a blue background.
Speaking of the name change, MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler said:
"This was not a decision that was made quickly or without significant debate. During this time of transition, NBC Universal decided that our brand requires a new, separate identity"
The Post included a comment from a company insider that read:
"It doesn’t set a great precedent for management to change the name after promising staffers it wouldn’t"
This change also sparked many comments from viewers that don't think this name change will go over well. A user, @BrianSabol, wrote:
"They’ll be off the air in a year"
The internet reacts to MSNBC’s new name, MS NOW
Soon after the announcement was made live, internet personality, Curtis Houck, uploaded a tweet on X with the caption:
"Here was Joe Scarborough announcing on 'Morning Joe' that MSNBC will be changing its name to MS NOW once the network completes its split from NBCUniversal. Watch these clowns try and spin this as fan-freak-tastic."
The tweet got the attention of many, with social media users bashing the new name and logo of MS NOW. Let's have a look.
A user, @superbucks2050, said:
"MS for MESS or MISERABLE?"
Another user, @cottinghamcarl, posted:
"MS NOT."
One more user, @realchuggins, commented:
"MS Nah"
A user, @MAPatriot1630, tweeted:
"I don't see them surviving long without some Billionaire backing them."
Another user, @PKBirkmeyer, posted:
"Who is taking bets on how long 'MSNOW' will last??"
One more user, @tomowenokc, wrote:
"I suppose they will no longer be called commies as part of the makeover, perhaps commy pinkos will soften their image."
Along with the user's reaction, filmmaker and host Robby Starbuck also wrote on X:
"I just want to meet the absolute bandit who got MSNBC execs to fork over tons of $$$ for this logo and a name that reminds you of multiple sclerosis. I bet he hates them and can’t believe they used it."
The official rebrand of MSNBC to MS NOW will take effect later this year. According to NBC News, Comcast will continue to hold the rights to NBC’s key assets, including NBC, NBC Sports, Peacock, and Bravo.
