On Thursday, May 8, Robert Francis Prevost was announced as Pope Francis's successor as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Dominique François Joseph Mamberti made the announcement on a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square. Following his election, Robert Francis Prevost has taken the name Pope Leo XIV.
The decision came after 133 cardinals intensely deliberated over the course of two days while also participating in the papal conclave, a tradition that the church has followed for centuries in selecting the next Pope.
The deliberation was successful after white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel's chimney on Thursday evening, after the first meeting was deemed inconclusive.
Pope Leo XIV also addressed the crowd gathered at the square. He thanked the cardinals for electing him as the new leader of the Catholic church and thanked his former diocese in the South American country. The Pope paid tribute to Pope Francis and also gave a short message on peace, which he hoped would “enter your hearts, reach your families and all people, wherever they are.”
