Gustav Klimt's last painting remains unfinished. The timeline of the painting was recorded between 1917 to 1918. The painting titled "Posthumous Portrait of Ria Munk III" is an oil on canvas painting that measures 178.1 cm × 89.9 cm. At the moment, the "Posthumous Portrait of Ria Munk III" is privately owned.

Klimt was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the founding fathers of the Vienna Secession movement. He was one of the most well-known painters in Europe during his time. Gustav's contribution to the painting world included developments to the Art Nouveau style in Europe. One distinct style of his paintings includes "frank eroticism," and the subjects in his work of art mainly include the female body.

Before Gustav Klimt passed away in January 1918, he suffered a stroke that paralysed the right side of his body. The Austrian painter died the following month due to pneumonia at the age of 55.

More than a century later, one of his works, the Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer, was sold for $236.4 million during an auction. It now holds the record of being the second most expensive painting ever sold at an auction, and it is also the most expensive work of modern art sold at an auction.
