The Japanese Manga, Watashi Ga Mita Marai (The Future I Saw), is reportedly leading people to cancel their trips to Japan. Originally published in 1999 by writer Ryo Tatsuki, the author's reported premonitions allegedly predicted the 2011 Japan tsunami, which affected countless lives. According to the Japanese media outlet, The Mainichi, the book caught everyone's attention for its cover, which reportedly had warnings of the 2011 disaster.
The book was reprinted by a Japanese publisher, Ashuka Shinsha, in 2021. It reportedly features a description that a catastrophic event will occur in July 2025. People have dubbed Ryo Tatsuki as the new Baba Vanga, a Bulgarian mystic who allegedly made predictions about disasters. The Future I Saw (2021) is reportedly based on Tatsuki's dreams, in which she mentions,
“The sea boils south of Japan in July 2025 and it will cause a mega tsunami." (Rough translation)
Tourists are reportedly cancelling their Japan trips amid The Future I Saw's warnings
The Japanese Manga went viral after its alleged 2011 prediction, and travellers have reportedly sought mass trip cancellations based on its predictions for July 2025. The speculations have spread across the internet, with many weighing whether the disaster is imminent. Ryo Tatsuki reportedly spoke to The Mainichi about her claims. She reportedly said,
"The high level of interest everyone is showing is proof of growing awareness of disaster prevention, and I'm taking it as a positive thing. I hope that this interest will lead to safety measures and preparedness."
She noted that while everyone has a "right to interpretation", she emphasised that one should not get "swept" and consider "expert opinion." The publishers also attempted to reduce the panic surrounding the book and said,
"The contents of this book published by our company are based on prophetic dreams the author had, and are not intended to stir up undue anxiety in any way. When it comes to disasters and other events, we believe it is important to respond carefully and appropriately based on expert advice."
In related news, the Japanese Cabinet Office has previously warned about earthquakes in the Nankai Trough. On its official X channel in April 2025, the officials had also posted information about protecting oneself during an earthquake.
Travellers are reportedly seeking preventive measures and cancelling their Japan travel plans following the alleged prophecy in The Future I Saw. While the author has noted that her writings are open to "interpretations", no official announcements have been made. The public has also been advised not to panic.
