Elon Musk's new AI-powered encyclopedia, Grokipedia, isn't just a wiki rival it's a grand vision for preserving human knowledge across the cosmos. Musk says the name Grokipedia is only temporary: once the platform improves, he plans to rebrand it as Encyclopedia Galactica, inspired by classic science-fiction. At its heart, this isn't just about building a better encyclopedia it's about creating a lasting legacy of knowledge for future generations, even beyond Earth.

In a recent post, Musk laid out a deeply futuristic idea: copies of this digital library won’t just live on servers, but will be etched into ultra durable "stone microfont" and dispatched to the Moon, Mars, and farther.

He draws a direct parallel to the Library of Alexandria a repository of learning that was tragically lost and frames Encyclopedia Galactica as a safeguard so the sum of what we know won't vanish, no matter what happens to our civilization.

Grokipedia's New Name: Encyclopedia Galactica

Musk's announcement set social media buzzing. On X, he wrote that

"when Grokipedia is good enough (long way to go), we will change the name to Encyclopedia Galactica."

He described it as an "open-source distillation of all knowledge, including audio, images and video." Rather than being a static website, he imagines something far more epic a cosmic time capsule for human civilization.

The idea combines Musk's sci-fi leanings with a very real purpose. He likened the project to a modern-day Library of Alexandria, warning that knowledge can be lost if it's only stored in fragile digital form. By putting parts of the encyclopedia into physical form and sending them across the solar system, Musk hopes future humans or even alien civilizations can rediscover what we once knew.

Not everyone took the announcement lightly. Researchers and commentators raised concerns about Grokipedia's accuracy. Some say its entries lean heavily on Wikipedia itself, with nearly identical text in some places. Others worry about the platform's reliability and whether AI alone without full human oversight can truly build a neutral knowledge base.

The new name for Grokipedia is Encyclopedia Galactica, a title that reflects Musk's ambition to build not just another encyclopedia, but an interplanetary vault of human wisdom. Through his X post, he painted a future where our collective knowledge survives not only on Earth, but etched into stone and scattered across the Moon, Mars, and beyond. It's a bold, sci-fi-flavored mission and one that many are watching closely to see whether it delivers on the promise.
