The release date for the GTA 6 game on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S is no longer as close as expected. Rockstar Games, on May 2, 2025, released an official statement informing fans that the launch of the highly-anticipated gaming series has been postponed by months.
GTA 6 will now be released on May 26, 2026. The game’s creators began their statement with an apology to gamers and fans, thanking them for their support and the momentum created for the GTA 6 launch:
"Hi everyone, Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game."
Rockstar Games further explained the reason for the delay—the need to create a high-quality gaming experience to match the level of anticipation for the sixth edition of the Grand Theft Auto games:
"With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve."
The statement ended with a promise to share more updates on the game. Gaming news sites widely speculated that GTA 6 would be released in the Fall of 2025.
GTA 6 may arrive on Personal Computers in early 2026, according to Corsair's executive
A statement from Ronald van Veen, Vice President of Finance and IR for Corsair Gaming, during the company’s Q4 earnings call, led to speculation about the release date of GTA 6 on PCs. The executive at the PC hardware company seemingly inferred that GTA 6 would launch on PC ports in the coming year.
A transcript from the company’s earnings call on February 12, 2025, quoted van Veen as saying;
"GTA 6 is probably the one everyone is talking about. And we'll get a glimpse of that, I think, later on in the year for console. My understanding now is it's going to come out in the fall for console and then early '26 for PC."
Rockstar Games has yet to confirm this information.
The last installment, Grand Theft Auto V, was brought out in 2013 and sold over 200 million copies. GTA creators announced in December 2023 that the sixth edition of the gaming series was in the works, with a trailer being released on December 1, 2023. The trailer featured Lucia, the game’s first female lead since 2000, as a fugitive of the law. Rockstar Games described GTA 6 as the “biggest and most immersive evolution of the GTA series yet.”
