TikToker Meile Weatherill was recently involved in a controversy over her remarks about a concentration camp in Germany. As per The Tab, the incident occurred while she was touring the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site during her honeymoon.
While exploring the memorial site during what should have been a solemn visit, the influencer made a controversial comment stating:
“The dust is a paid actor”.
Her comments seemingly poked fun at the thousands of people who lost their lives at the concentration camp.
This has made a large percentage of users on social media outraged as they wondered what caused her to make a jest of the tragic experience. To put it into perspective, Dachau was the first concentration camp to have been opened in Nazi Germany, where 40,000 lives were taken away brutally, and above 200,000 people were imprisoned between 1933 and 1945.
Before the social media uproar, Meile Weatherill had already built a reputation as a lifestyle influencer on TikTok, where she encouraged her followers through her videos. Her TikTok account is personality and lifestyle oriented, which includes household-oriented videos and cleaning tips, and organizational videos.
Meile Weatherill controversy
Meile Weatherill's remarks have not gone well with the audience, with her fans also issuing scathing responses for overstepping her bounds. Her post has since been deleted, and the influencer has even posted an apology where she took responsibility for her actions and expressed remorse.
In the TikTok video posted on Monday, she was quoted as saying:
"This is my attempt to make it right, not just with an apology, but by honouring the victims and their families through education about what actually happened and why we must never forget."
She then went on to add:
"With all that said and done, I can’t ever reverse what I said, and I wish I hadn’t said that. Truly. There’s nothing that would explain my actions; there’s truly nothing to excuse. I said that, and I have to take accountability for it. This is the best way that I feel I can do it, by educating others on how horrible and how brutal this time in history was. It’s nothing to take lightly, and it’s nothing to joke about. Making a joke is never okay"
The public reception to her apology has been mixed, especially as she alluded to the tour guide also making similar remarks. Meile Weatherill has turned off the comments on her video apology, which some interpreted as a way of not being judged further, although others have seen it as a measure to stem the tide of abusive comments.
