Preta Gil, whose full name was Preta Maria Gadelha Gil Moreira, passed away on July 20, 2025. The Brazilian actress and singer came from a family with a strong music background. Her father, Gilberto Gil, was the former Minister of Culture in Brazil, and is also a musician. According to Quem, the 50-year-old singer passed away in the US while getting treatment for colorectal cancer.
Gil was first diagnosed with cancer in January 2023, after which it went into remission in the same year. However, in 2024, it was reported that Preta Gil's cancer had spread to four parts of her body, which included her two lymph nodes, a metastasis in the peritoneum, and a nodule in the ureter.
Preta Gil was not only known for her music but also for her fiery spirit in fighting against racism, advocating for the LGBTQ+ community, women's rights, and preaching about self-acceptance and love.
