Sharon Chuter has passed away aged 38. She founded Uoma Beauty, a beauty company geared towards diversifying the industry using black-inclusive products and initiatives. According to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the founder and creative director was discovered on a patio on August 14, 2025.

Investigations into the cause of her death are still ongoing. Ahead of the Kirb, a Substack media outlet reported on August 22, 2025, that a source who knew the situation revealed that the news of the founder’s death was relayed to employees of Uoma Beauty by an executive in the company.

The news outlet further reported that the LA County Medical Examiner hasn’t revealed whether Chuter passed away at her home or not.

More details about Sharon Chuter’s UOMA Beauty company and her initiatives

Sharon Chuter founded UOMA in 2019 and launched her sister company, UOMA Beauty, in 2021. In 2020, she spearheaded the Pull Up For Change initiative, urging brands to reveal how many Black employees they had.

The initiative also birthed the Make it Black campaign to encourage meaningful conversations around the Black race. The campaign partnered with top brands, with proceeds allocated to the Pull Up for Change Impact Fund.

In 2023, Sharon Chuter stepped down as UOMA’s CEO, citing health issues and a lack of work-life balance. The brand was later acquired by private equity and relaunched in 2024 without Chuter.

Months before her death, Chuter filed a lawsuit against MacArthur Beauty, which acquired Uoma Beauty after the brand’s brief closing in 2023. The lawsuit alleged that:

“BrainTrust took control of Uoma's operations and ultimately pushed Ms. Chuter out of her operational roles.”
