Joseph Manuel Marquez, who goes by his gamer name Mang0, was banned by Cloud9 after eleven years. The decision came after Joseph's inappropriate behavior, including harassing other streamers at Ludwig Ahgren's Beerio Kart World Cup, which was held on June 21.
In the statement, Cloud9 wrote,
"We are aware of the recent incident involving Joseph "mang0" Marquez and fully acknowledge the concerns raised by our community and partners. Following an internal evaluation, we have made the decision to release mang0 from Cloud9."
It continues:
"Regardless of tenure or accomplishments, the behavior demonstrated is entirely unacceptable and directly conflicts with our organization's core values. We maintain a zero-tolerance stance regarding harassment or any other form of inappropriate conduct."
Mang0 is an American professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player, known for his strong gaming skills. He has also won a number of major tournaments, including GENESIS and Smash Summit 11, making his name in the industry.
What happened at Ludwig Ahgren's Beerio Kart World Cup?
The event took place on June 21, when popular YouTuber Ludwig Ahgren hosted the Beerio Kart World Cup. According to Sports Illustrated, he brought together 23 other creators to race, drink, and have fun during the stream. He also reportedly gave away free consoles to fans watching the event.
While the event was meant to be fun, many viewers noticed Mang0 behaving inappropriately toward other streamers after drinking. His actions drew attention and led to backlash online.
In one of the viral videos, Joseph Manuel Marquez was seen humping at two female streamers while asking them to end the stream.
Ludwig Ahgren responds to the controversy surrounding Mang0
After the clips went viral online, Ludwig Ahgren, the host of the Beerio Kart World Cup, where Joseph was invited, released a statement on his live stream saying:
"I reached out to anyone who might have felt uncomfortable and talked to them. And I already told Mang0 this: am no longer inviting Mang0 to Mogul Moves events because, like, you know, it's a privilege to go to an event, man."
He further added:
"If somebody appearing jeopardizes somebody else having a good time, that just can’t be a thing."
Ludwig also reportedly said that Joseph understood why the decision was made and has agreed with it. Amidst the controversy, Joseph released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) where he wrote:
"Dont want anyone to feel bad for me / defend me Sorry to everyone I've let down or hurt I know it just looks like im trying to save face but I genuinely feel so awful about it.. all I've done is reflect on my life and realized im a broken human I will try and redeem myself over time as I always do"
Mang0 responds to Cloud9's statement
The backlash, along with his behavior, also led Cloud9 to cut ties with him. However, Cloud9 did wish Joseph all the best for his future at the end of their statement.
Joseph responded to Cloud9's statement in one of his tweets by saying:
"C9 dropping me Probably getting banned from tourneys F*cking s*it man No one to blame but myself but man Never though I could hit this low Probably won't hear from me for a while Im sorry everyone Wish I was better I had it all and f*cking tossed it in the trashcan"
While Joseph has publicly acknowledged his mistakes and expressed regret, there is a possibility he could face further bans from other tournament organizers in the future.
