Mike Tirico, the American sportscaster who was scheduled to host the NBC's coverage of the 151st Kentucky Derby on May 3, had to abruptly leave the broadcast, leaving everyone confused.

As per NBC News, Mike confirmed that he left the broadcast because he suffered an allergic reaction during the same. He had consumed a snack with nuts, which he is allergic to since childhood.

On May 4, 2025, he took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to address the issue. He said:

''Hate being a scratch after making the starting gate @KentuckyDerby. Just a significant reaction to my nut allergy. If you have one you know how it can knock you down.''

Mike Tirico speaks out on why he left the Kentucky Derby broadcast

Mike, who is the lead announcer for NBC Sunday Night Football, had to leave the Kentucky Derby coverage on May 3, as he experienced a severe allergic reaction.

He then appeared on the NBC's Today show, where he explained what happened to him, and reassured viewers that he was doing better. He said:

''I feel fine. I have my coffee, watching the (TODAY) show like I do every morning. I’ve had a nut allergy my whole life and am usually very, very careful. I ate something that had a nut in it and had a nut allergy, causing your throat and your nose and all that stuff to kind of clog up and swell. It affects your breathing a little bit.''

He said that he had taken an epinephrine shot and was treated by the EMTs at Churchill Downs and was feeling better. He then said that he wasn't aware that May is Asthama and Allergy Awarness month until someone pointed it out on social media.

He also said that his son has a nut allergy and emphasized on how individuals with food allergy must be careful. He said:

"I had it as a kid and it's a real thing. My son has it. Lots of us know someone who has a food allergy, so read labels. And I do as often as possible to check. Sometimes it will say 'Made in a factory where nuts are present.' You have to really be careful about that stuff.''

He continued:

''Restaurants are great about it now, folks, so ask, inquire, be curious and be courteous to those who have nut allergies or other food allergies. There are many, obviously, around the country.''

Mike also explained how cross-contamination can be bad for people with food allergies and also emphasized that dinner hosts should let people know if the food served contains any kind of nuts.

After Mike had to leave the broadcast, Ahmed Fareed took over and told the viewers that Mike had suffered an allergic reaction. Mike has, however, confirmed that he will return to his broadcasting duties and will host the Preakness Stakes on NBC, scheduled on May 17, 2025.
