Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has recently recruited top-talent researchers from its competitor, OpenAI, as part of its push to build a new Superintelligence lab.
Zuckerberg has been offering massive salary packages—as high as $100 million—to lure people from OpenAI, according to comments made by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on his brother Jack Altman’s podcast. OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer, Mark Chen, addressed Meta’s tactics in a memo sent to his employees on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
He wrote:
“I feel a visceral feeling right now, as if someone has broken into our home and stolen something. Please trust that we haven’t been sitting idly by.”
The AI startup is reportedly shutting down for a week to allow its employees to recharge. But it knows that Meta might use this time to poach new talent from the company. The report added that Altman’s staff has an intense work schedule, working up to 80 hours per week.

Explaining the drama as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hires top talent from OpenAI
Mark Chen, OpenAI's Chief Research Officer, has expressed his disappointment upon learning that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been hiring talent from his company, approaching them personally with lucrative offers.
In a memo addressed to his employees on June 28, 2025, he spoke on the issue. He described the situation as deeply personal and unsettling, emphasizing that the OpenAI leadership is not standing by passively, according to a report in Wired.
The report said he assured the staff that he has been working with the leaders of the company, including Altman, “around the clock to talk to those with offers.” He further added, “we’ve been more proactive than ever before, we’re recalibrating comp, and we’re scoping out creative ways to recognize and reward top talent.”
Reportedly, Chen said that he has “high personal standards of fairness” and aims to retain top talent with that motive in mind. He said:
“While I’ll fight to keep every one of you, I won’t do so at the price of fairness to others.”
Another report in The Sherwood added that Mark Zuckerberg has recruited at least eight OpenAI researchers. A report in Bloomberg added that Zuckerberg’s new AI team, Meta Superintelligence Labs, will be headed by Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang. It will reportedly focus on large language models, AI products, and fundamental AI research.
Wang will be accompanied by Nat Friedman, the former CEO of Microsoft’s GitHub. The CEO of Meta Platforms wrote in an internal memo:
“As the pace of AI progress accelerates, developing superintelligence is coming into sight. I believe this will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way.”
The Bloomberg report indicated that Mark Zuckerberg has hired 11 new researchers and plans to hire engineers from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google to join the MSL team.
