Created and written by Derek Haas, Countdown, is a crime drama series that features Jensen Ackles, Eric Dane, and others. The show premiered on June 25, 2025 and has 13 episodes that release on a weekly basis. Even though all the episodes of the show have not been released yet, the series has failed to gain significant traction as it had hoped to achieve. The show focuses on detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), who is from LAPD and must track down the person responsible for killing a Department of Homeland Security officer. Meachum is joined in this task with other undercover agents from other agencies and their search leads them down a more sinister and vast conspiracy. Countdown has received mixed reviews from critics and viewers and while it has been noted for its action and star-studded cast, it has been criticized for its plot, characters, and pace. Therefore, here are 10 reasons why the show has not been able to create momentum.

A lack of urgency, clunky dialogues, and other reasons why Countdown has been unable to garner audiences responses

1. A predictable plot

Many viewers and critics that have watched Countdown have noted that the show is weighed down by a plot that does not feel fresh and exciting. While the show has a lot of thrilling chase sequences and a star-studded cast including Jensen Ackles, Countdown on Prime Video feels weak due to the predictable plot about a lone detective trying to figure out a central conspiracy. In today’s day and age where there are many crime dramas on television, each show needs to be bolder and more unique than the rest to really catch the eye of the viewers and the critics. However, early reviews of the show have stated that the series is pulled down by a predictable plot that gets weaker with each passing episode. Therefore, this is one of the reasons why Countdown is unable to garner the audience and critics response as it should have got.

2. A lot of anticlimaxes and lack of urgency

Many critics who watched Countdown have noted that the show has a lot of anticlimaxes that make it one of the reasons why the show has been unable to gain traction among the viewers and the critics. Daniel Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter gave a scathing review and detailed that the series has a lot of anticlimaxes towards the latter half of the show, which weakens the more promising setup in the earlier parts of the show. Further, he mentions that even though the show establishes that an imminent nuclear attack is on the way, Countdown does not seem to showcase that urgency in its pacing and characters that are on the shows and therefore, the Prime Video show is not taut and breathless. Even other viewers and critics noted that the show does not feel logical in places and has spread itself so thin that the story does not come together organically.

3. The characters don’t feel interesting

One of the major reasons why a show or movie for that matter, works, is that it has characters that are relatable or entertaining. However, Countdown is unable to turn over its star-studded cast including Jensen Ackles, into a firepower that is worthy of accolades and makes the viewers and critics sit down for a show. Viewers and critics of the show have noted that while the series has a popular star cast including Ackles, Eric Dane, and others, it is still unable to make the viewers and critics appreciate the show. While actors like Dane and Ackles have been given positive reviews for their decent performances individually, the show is unable to bring a certain level of team spirit and chemistry when all the characters are solving crime together or unraveling conspiracies. Therefore, the Prime Video show, Countdown, suffers in this regard.

4. It has clunky and repetitive dialog

Another reason why Countdown has been unable to garner positive responses from viewers and critics is because the show has a lot of awkward dialogues that make the characters seem unnatural and forced. A show and its characters being relatable are one of the most important reasons how a series gains traction with the viewers and critics and if the dialogues of the show are not natural and smooth-flowing, it can lead to the entire show not being taken seriously. The Prime Video show also suffers from repetitive dialogues as Fienberg has noted as every piece of information is repeated multiple times for the viewers who often watch the show while being busy on their phones—a modern tradition that is known as “second-screen viewing”. This also contributes to clunky dialog as the repetition makes it sound unnatural. Therefore, this is another reason why Countdown suffers in terms of popularity.

5. The show has a slow pace

Aramide Tinubu of Variety has noted that while Countdown has all the ingredients for an engaging action show, it is unable to make the right use of it. The Prime Video series starts on a bright and fiery note, literally, but soon becomes dull and convoluted due to its complex plot and loose handling of plotlines. Critics like Tinubu and other viewers have noted that Countdown’s biggest weakness is that its mission is not intriguing enough to be followed through 13 episodes. The Variety critic notes that a number of episodes are spent unravelling the villain’s origin story and that is also done at a slow pace. Tinubu notes that the series should have been shorter in number and that is line with other critics and viewers comments as well, who have noted that the show drags on due to its long list of episodes.

6. There are many crime dramas in today’s times

As stated above, crime dramas have become increasingly popular in today’s times and that has led to many shows having the same genre as Countdown, being released for viewers and critics. Series that are centered around the task forces are intriguing to begin with, but can quickly lose steam if they are not handled carefully. Many networks and streaming platforms, like Prime Video, have released shows like Countdown, which make the viewers and critics feel that each show is just like another. Shows from the same genre can stand out only if they have an interesting premise and are handled well. However, the recent Prime Video series suffers from a lack of compelling storyline or characters, which has led to the show not being able to garner enough sympathy among viewers and critics. Therefore, the show has not been able to gain steam.

7. Negative early reviews

Another major factor that decides how a show will perform among audiences and critics is if it is able to get positive early reviews. If a show is able to get good reviews in the beginning itself, then the series will create curiosity and interest among other viewers and critics and the series will therefore have a more impressive run. However, Countdown has received mixed reviews so far, which has been detrimental. While some reviews have no doubt, praised the show for its action-packed episodes and star-studded cast, other reviews have noted its predictable plot and lack of strong characters, which has become an indicator of the show’s overall likeability. Even if a show starts off mild, it can overturn lukewarm reviews if it gains steam towards the middle of the show and the reviews get stronger. However, Countdown has been noted for getting weaker with each passing episode, and therefore, the Prime Video show has been unable to gain a crowd.

8. The show has forgettable subplots

Once again, like other action and crime drama shows, Countdown also features a protagonist who has a personal malady and has other characters, whose personal lives are revealed slowly and progressively over the course of the episodes. The Prime Video show tries to do a lot. It not only wants to give viewers an urgent and hectic action-packed show with themes about nuclear warfare and global terror problems, but it also wants to show that its characters are layered and fully-developed and wants to showcase their personal lives. Countdown reveals aspects of the agents’ lives gradually and wants the viewers to have a deeper understanding of why each character behaves as they do. However, critics and viewers have noted that these characterizations are not intriguing or relatable and don’t make any of the characters distinct. While backstories often enrich a character and add a new dimension to the story, in the show, this only weakens the plot further.

9. A weak marketing campaign

Even though the show was marketed aggressively at the beginning, as it had Jensen Ackles, it seems to have slowed down on its marketing tactics, and that has made the show dwindle among other crime drama shows on television. A strong and sustained marketing effort is needed for any show or movie to be able to stay in the minds of the viewers for a long period of time, and with streaming platforms releasing so many titles simultaneously, each show only gets a dedicated marketing campaign for a short period of time. Therefore, while Countdown was marketed like other shows in the beginning, the Prime Video show has less digital buzz currently. This leads to many viewers being unaware of the show altogether or being unable to decide for themselves if the series is worth watching.

10. An unmemorable visual style

Another practical reason apart from weak marketing is the fact that Countdown does not have a memorable cinematography that makes the show stand apart from others. The visuals of a show matter a lot, and in today’s times, where there are so many shows of each genre, Countdown should have had a distinct visual style, which would have set it apart from other crime dramas. However, the Prime Video series does not have a distinct production design and therefore, does not stand out in terms of aesthetics. The show feels like another procedural series, and even its action scenes have not been memorable. Therefore, even in terms of visuals, the show is not able to make itself unique among an already populated crowd of similar-genre shows.
