Reacher Season 3 is the third installment in the Reacher series. The action and crime show is developed by Nick Santora and is based on the book series by Lee Child. Starring Alan Ritchson as the titular Reacher, the series focuses on the self-proclaimed hobo and former US Army military police officer, traveling to various destinations and battling against criminals. However, Reacher Season 3 has received mixed reviews when compared to its previous two installments. While there has also been a lot of praise, there are a few points that underscore that Reacher Season 3 was unable to reach the creative success of its previous chapters. Here are 10 such reasons why.
Sloppy moments, lost charm, and other reasons why Reacher Season 3 does not shine as bright as its predecessors
1. Reacher Season 3 has a complicated plot and uneven pacing

Reacher Season 3 has received mixed reviews and is considered a step down from its previous two installments. One of the reasons for this is the show’s complicated plot and uneven pacing. The plot of the show tries to be complex as compared to the previous two seasons, and that causes the show to be complex instead of comprehensive. There are too many side plots and unnecessary detours, especially when the characters leave Rockwell. For example, in the second season, Reacher was forced to travel to New York City, which was not needed. The season therefore falters in quality as the characters leave town, and it breaks the immersion that the viewers have felt in the narrative. It sometimes feels that some of the plot points have been rushed while others are unnecessarily drawn out. This leads to uneven pacing.
2. Reacher Season 3 has sloppy moments

Another weakness of Reacher Season 3 is that there are some incidents in the show’s third season that feel underbaked and not thought through. For example, during the middle part of the series, the plot is already all over the place and the show is unable to save its protagonist, Reacher, from making sloppy decisions. Even though Reacher is usually very meticulous and intelligent in his work, even he fails to consider a potentially negative outcome of holding a dangerous individual indefinitely. This is an example of how the show is unable to gather its reigns and deliver a strategic and taut plot. The show throws in superfluous incidents in the show in hopes of creating suspense but it ends up dragging the conflict further and does not add anything to the plot of the show, feeling artificial instead. Therefore, this is one reason why the third season is unable to compare to the more nuanced previous seasons.
3. Reacher Season 3 deviates from source material

Reacher Season 3 is based on the novels by Lee Child, and even though it is normal for the show or movie to deviate from its source material during adaptation, it is important that the deviation works in favor of the plot and does not feel subpar. However, there are a few plot points in Reacher Season 3 that make the viewers feel that the show should have stayed authentic to the book. For example, the character of the Duke is less evil and cunning than in the book, and therefore, his impact feels less in the series. Further, the show also adapts the character of Paulie differently and shifts from a creepy and sadistic portrayal to a more formidable and scarier one. One reason given for this change is that in the book, Paulie is a bodyguard who tortures Mrs. Beck. However, in the show, the character of Beck has been dead, and therefore, the dynamic of Paulie also shifts.
4. Reacher Season 3 lacks the charm of the first two seasons

Perhaps one of the most damning negative reviews of Reacher Season 3 is that it is unable to match the charm, the suspense, and the thrills of the first two seasons. Especially the first season. The first season was known for its taut storytelling, and many viewers felt that the third season of the show felt dragged. It therefore messed up the momentum of the series as a whole. For example, the incident about the man in the cabin stayed on for way too long. Many viewers were unimpressed with the writing and plot of the third season, and all these factors added to the show lacking in charm this season. On the other hand, there were some viewers who felt that some of the plot points were rushed and that also led to the show not being able to gain ground like its predecessors. While the first season of the show had a compelling mystery and taut storytelling, this season lacked on those fronts.
5. Reacher Season 3 overly relies on action

Reacher Season 3 is an action show, and therefore it is natural that the series will have lots of action sequences. However, the show is also a thriller and a crime drama, and therefore, the third season of the show lacks the suspense and the intrigue of the previous two seasons. While action scenes can be a heavy draw for viewers who love adrenaline-pumping scenes, other viewers and critics feel that the over-reliance on action has hampered the plot and character development in the show. There are many new characters in the show in the third season, and it would have been better if the show had dedicated more time to the viewers getting to know them. However, the makers of the show focus more on the chest-thumping action sequences, which makes the show too messy and loud, without giving proper time to character development and plot pacing.
6. Reacher Season 3 makes questionable casting choices

While Alan Ritchson has been praised for being a great performer as Reacher, there have been some reviews from the viewers and the critics over the other casting choices in Reacher Season 3, and many have expressed their disappointment. For example, some people did not like the actors who were using an East Coast accent in the show, like Sonya Cassidy, who plays the role of DEA agent Susan Duffy. Many thought that the actors were not properly trained to speak in that accent, and therefore, the end result did not come out as authentic and nuanced. Therefore, Reacher Season 3 has also received negative reviews for being unable to select the right actors for the roles in the series. Therefore, apart from uneven pacing and a complicated plot, the show also falters in making sure that the actors deliver an authentic diction and speech in the show.
7. Reacher Season 3 does not have a memorable supporting cast

One of the main highlights of Reacher Season 3 is the fact that Alan Ritchson stays the same as Reacher in every season, and he is always accompanied by a memorable supporting cast in each season. However, in the third season of the show, there seems to be a lack of charming and memorable performances on the part of the supporting characters, as the show does not give them the chance to bloom their characters. For example, in Season 1 there was Roscoe, played by Willa Fitzgerald, and in Season 2 there was David O'Donnell, played by Shaun Sipos. However, there is a dearth of iconic supporting characters in the third season. While Maria Sten’s Frances Neagley comes back, her storyline does not move forward, and she stays back in Chicago. Therefore, the third season feels like a clichéd action show where all the focus is on the hero and the action without any secondary considerations.
8. Reacher Season 3 falls short in its romantic angle

Another major point that has been raised by critics and viewers about the faults that lie in Reacher Season 3 focuses on the hero, Reacher, entering into a romantic relationship in the series. With each season, viewers see Reacher finding a new woman in his life, and while it felt authentic in the first two seasons, repeating the same storyline in the third season feels like a lack of originality. Reacher’s entanglements with Roscoe and Dixon have been deemed more real and original by the viewers and critics, but his latest romance feels unnatural and forced. Critics and viewers have pointed out that in a season that is already lacking in a clear plot and has an uneven pacing, it feels like the addition of an unnecessary romantic plot further dampens the quality of the show in the third season. Many feel that the romantic subplot was added just because Reacher had a romantic angle in the previous two seasons.
9. Reacher Season 3 had a finale that felt obvious

Reacher Season 3 has faltered in many points, but even in the show’s finale, it could not redeem itself entirely. Granted, the finale does have a better pace as compared to its sluggish latter half and regains most of its immersive and tense feeling that the show is known for. It still feels like it was too little and too late. While the finale episode has the highly entertaining fight between Reacher and Paulie that fans had been increasingly waiting for, it still feels that the moment was quite obvious and there was no uniqueness to the plot. While the series does make a massive mistake of keeping Paulie on the backburner for so long, and it is good to finally watch the two men duke it out, it still feels obvious. Therefore, there could have been more surprises in the finale and more layers. On the other hand, the speech by Duffy about relationships felt out-of-place and unnecessary and again pulled down the quality of the finale.
10. Reacher Season 3's finale felt rushed and abrupt

Reacher Season 3 also misses out on its finale in another important point. The death of Beck in the finale episode of the third season feels rushed and could have been more respectful and righteous. Even though Beck has Quinn, he got compromised due to an unfortunate stroke of luck and Beck has to die in a sacrificial manner. Even the rekindling of his relationship with his son at such a sensitive moment feels abrupt and insensitive. Therefore, it would have been better if Reacher had tackled Quinn properly in the finale and made him pay for what he did to Lt. Dominique Kohl. On the other hand, Quinn accepts his fate quickly when Reacher reminds him that Dominique died due to a shotgun blast. All of this feels very abrupt and unsatisfying, looking at the character of Quinn.
