As Lee Harvey Oswald waits above Dealey Plaza, Jake and Sadie descend on the depository in the finale episode of 11.22.63. Jake and Oswald play a nerve-wracking game of cat and mouse that results in Jake killing Oswald. On the other hand, Sadie is fatally shot in this chaos and eventually dies in Jake's arms. This is when Jake's personal life crumbles entirely, and the timeline changes to continue his journey.

Jake is briefly framed for the attempted assassination, and then cleared when an FBI agent and a personal call from President Kennedy assure his release. He goes back to Lisbon and walks back through the rabbit hole to see the future Al he once imagined himself as. But rather, he only sees an apocalyptic wasteland. He realises the new timeline is defined by nuclear annihilation, tyrannical rule, refugee camps, and societal breakdown. When Jake meets an aged Harry Dunning, he comes to the horrifying conclusion that saving Kennedy didn’t fix the world but can only shatter it.

Upon realizing the extent of his harm, Jake undoes everything by going back through the rabbit hole, wiping out all modifications. History snaps back into place, including Kennedy’s assassination, but Sadie lives. When Jake meets her again in 1960, the Yellow Card Man tells him that if he goes back into her life, she will die. This time, Jake listens. He walks away, giving up the love that had given his life meaning so that Sadie can live a full life without him.

Everything was back in 2016, here-perfect, mundane, imperfect, but alive. Having learned that Sadie lived to be an old woman who became a beloved teacher and had a good life, Jake takes a look. At a public event in her honor, they finally reconnect when the two meet again. They dance one last time, connected by something neither can remember fully but both feel.

During this emotional moment, Sadie asks Jake about his identity, while Jake replies truthfully that it only sounded more poetic at the moment. The ending reinforces the series’ key takeaway: Some tragedies have to happen, some loves have to be lost, and the most heroic thing a person can do is realize when they should not go back and alter the past.
