House is a medical drama created by David Shore. The show ran for eight seasons from 2004 to 2012 and featured Hugh Laurie in the titular role of Dr. Gregory House. The show focuses on Gregory, who is a misanthropic and cynical genius in the medical field but also uses unconventional methods to treat his patients. The show follows his exploits as he regularly gets into trouble with the hospital authorities over his controversial medical insights. The series was a critical and commercial success and won many awards during its run. Here are 12 episodes from the show in no particular order that showcase the series’ peak.

1. One Day, One Room

This episode from the show’s third season and the 12th episode, is an emotional one. Gregory is known for his anti-social persona and his inability to be empathetic towards people. Therefore, he faces a dilemma when a victim of rape confides in him and only wants to speak to him. While the doctor tries his best to refer the patient to the hospital therapist, the young girl, Eve, only wants to speak to him. The episode goes against the normal formula of the show and viewers get to see a different side of the doctor. Gregory is able to get Eve to open up about what happened to her and the two also spend some time discussing about morality and life. Surprisingly, even Gregory opens up about his past trauma and the episode is an insightful watch.


2. Everybody Dies

One of the most memorable episodes from House, the finale of the eighth season, was something that fans will remember for a long time. While some fans were divided, it still evoked a lot of emotions. The episode begins with Gregory waking up in a burning building and seeing a hallucination of Kutner. He also has visions about various friends and colleagues like Amber, his ex, and others. During his hallucinations, the people he sees, question him about his life’s choices. The episode comes at a time when the doctor is facing jail time and has lost a lot, therefore, the viewers see a morose Gregory for the first time. However, it is later revealed that Gregory faked his death so that he can spend time with Wilson as he is dying of cancer. Wilson and Foreman arrive in time to save the doctor from the burning building and the episode ends with the two friends riding off into the sunset on a pair of bikes. The episode therefore ends on a note of celebrating friendship, even though friendship is something that Gregory was never strong at.


3. Euphoria Part 1

This two-part episode from House’s 2nd season and 20th episode is one that presents a tough case in front of the genius doctor. The episode begins with a police officer being brought into the hospital with the strange symptom of uncontrollable laughter. As the officer’s illness gets worse, Gregory sends Foreman to the patient’s house to find some environmental source. However, Foreman does not come with any answers and gets the symptom himself. Foreman is also placed in quarantine with the patient and their symptoms gets worse. The episode is a fast-paced and suspenseful watch as the doctor races against time to find a cure. The police officer does a superb job at portraying his struggling condition and even Foreman is helpless. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the patient dies and there is still no cure.


4. Euphoria Part 2

The second season’s 21st episode begins with the doctor wanting to conduct an autopsy on the dead officer but not getting any permission from Cuddy. As Foreman’s condition continues to worsen and at a faster rate than that of the police officer, Gregory and his team has to race against time to solve the mysterious condition. Foreman suggests that a dangerous brain biopsy is conducted on him but House is not this favor. He therefore goes back to the police officer’s house to try and find the answers again. The conclusion is full of twists and turns as the team and Foreman have to work under constant fear of his imminent death. Ultimately, Foreman’s brain biopsy is conducted and he ends up with a side effect. The episode ends on a heartfelt note as Foreman and his father share a sweet moment along with the rest of the staff.


5. Under My Skin

House has many memorable episodes and the show’s fifth season’s 23rd episode, Gregory House begins to have hallucinations of Amber, his colleague, after her death. The doctor decides that he should confide in Wilson and tells him to keep an eye on him. While Wilson and Gregory try to do a variety of tests to find out the reason behind his hallucinations, it turns out that the reason is the drug Vicodin. House doesn’t want to go to rehab and he asks Cuddy to supervise him as he detoxes at home. As Gregory begins to hallucinate again due to the withdrawal symptoms, Cuddy is there to help him. When the doctor finally survives, he and Cuddy confess their feelings for each other and get intimate. However, it is revealed that even this was a hallucination. Therefore, the moment that fans of the show had been waiting for, did happen, but in an unusual circumstance.

The episode is from the show’s second season and its 17th episode. The episode is one of the interesting one as there is a charity Casino Night at the hospital. Therefore, the doctor and the others are seen in another avatar and not their regular attire. As the event is taking place and it seems that there isn’t going to be any medical emergency in this episode, a peculiar case happens. A patient of Cuddy’s comes at the hospital and has symptoms that are similar to one of the doctor's former patients, who also died. Gregory is therefore determined to find out the cause and therefore understand his former patient’s demise. However, Cuddy refuses to let Gregory take the case and the doctor decides to treat the boy behind her back. While the doctor wants to save the child and get to know the cause of his problem, he does cause tensions due to his dishonesty. The episode is interesting as it still features a medical case but the viewers see the staff in another avatar. The episode also highlights the early dynamic between Gregory and Cuddy.


7. 97 Seconds

House has some high-strung episodes and this is one of them. The episode is from the show’s fourth season and is the third episode. The episode is an exploration of death and begins with the doctor trying to search for new team members as he has fired his old team. He makes the candidates compete against one another and divides them into two team of men and women. While the candidates are busy trying to solve one case, where they must find a cure for a patient’s symptoms the fastest, Gregory is working on a completely different patient on his own. The episode is fast-paced and suspenseful and has a lot of chaos but adds layers to the series and the characters. The viewers have to keep up with two storylines and the episode is an interesting one. While Gregory is helping a patient who is trying to replicate a near-death experience, the other teams are trying to make sure that the other patient doesn’t die.


8. Three Stories

House is known for its stellar finales and the final episode of the first season is one of the best endings to the show. The episode begins with the doctor reluctantly filling in to give a lecture to a class of medical students. Even though the doctor did not want to deliver the lecture, he decides to tests his students’ acumen by presenting them with three similar cases, where all the patients have leg injuries. To make things interesting, Gregory even offers a unique perspective to his story and one of the surprises in the show is that Carmen Electra is one of the patients. The episode is not only interesting and insightful, it is also a shining example of storytelling and plays with the perspectives in a manner that also brings humor. The episode has a lot of twists and turns and is still considered as one of the best episodes on the show, even winning an Emmy.


9. Both Sides Now

This is the fifth season’s 24th episode and the episode begins with Gregory being in a good mood from the events of the previous episode, where the doctor was seeing hallucinations because of Vicodin. He is in such a good mood that he and Cuddy even spend the night together. The next day, Cuddy wants to forget what happened and wants to stay professional. However, Gregory decides to humiliate her and announces in front of everyone that they both slept together. This leads to House being fired by Cuddy. However, the episode then presents a twist as the doctor realizes that he hallucinated the whole thing and he never stopped taking Vicodin and he and Cuddy did not get intimate. The episode is important as the doctor finally decides to take things seriously about his health and reaches a breaking point. Wilson has to eventually take House to a mental health facility and the episode shakes a lot of things up for the show.


10. Last Resort

A hostage situation in a hospital is something that seems to be a favorite trope of the writers in a medical drama. There are many medical-based shows that have an episode on a hostage crises and House also has a memorable one in the show’s fifth season and the ninth episode. While other shows come up with such dramatic premises when they are running out of ideas, the series was able to make a memorable episode out of this common trope. The episode is about a man who is tired of being misdiagnosed by doctors and he decides to force Gregory to figure out what is wrong with him. The writers make the episode interesting as the man forces the doctor to use the other hostage patients as guinea pigs so that the doctor can find a cure for the man. The premise is dark and intense and also features guest stars like Evan Peters, Wood Harris, and more.


11. The C-Word

The episode is part of the show’s 8th season and is the 19th episode. The episode is also directed by Hugh Laurie himself and the actor brings forth a certain soft side to the doctor. The episode is memorable because it focuses on the doctor caring for his best friend and he copes with a terminal illness and the doctor decides to administer experimental treatment on his friend. While House is a show that generally does not take a lot of risks and is one of the family-friendly shows, there are episode like this one that have a dark undertone and take storytelling risks. Further, as the show was coming to its end, the doctor's future was becoming increasingly bleak and this aspect is highlighted in this episode. The episode also showcases the close friendships in the life of Gregory.


12. Broken

The first episode of the show’s sixth season continues to focus on House’s psychology and his addiction to Vicodin. The episode is therefore deeply engaging and powerful. The episode also features guest star Lin-Manuel Miranda and he is Gregory’s roommate while he is interned at a psychiatric unit. While House entered on his own will, he resists change and does not listen to authority, despite the risk of him losing his medical license. The episode has received a lot of high ratings from the viewers and the episode showcases a lot of development and growth in just the 90-minute episode. While other shows take their time to showcase development, House was able to do it in just one episode. The episode is also important because it delves into the doctor's psychology.
