Two of Cartoon Network’s most popular, and occasionally terrifying, animated series officially do not have a platform to be streamed. As of 31st July 2025, Courage the Cowardly Dog and What’s New, Scooby-Doo? have been removed from HBO Max.

Both shows, which hold a special place in the hearts of fans who grew up in the 2000s, are no longer available on the platform. Their removal comes after the expiration of their licensing deals, and unfortunately, they won’t be renewed. This is part of a larger content shift at HBO Max, where children's programming is not the priority presently.

Cartoon Network horror classics have been pulled from HBO Max

Courage the Cowardly Dog originally aired on Cartoon Network from 1999 to 2002. It quickly stood out from other cartoons due to its unique horror-comedy style.

Created by John R. Dilworth, the show centered on a nervous pink dog named Courage who lived in the middle of nowhere with his kind and loving owner, Muriel, and her grumpy husband, Eustace. The little family faced all sorts of bizarre and creepy creatures that stood out in the genre of children's animation.

Its blend of horror and emotional storytelling helped it become a favorite among Cartoon Network fans. Even years after it ended, it remains one of the most memorable shows from the channel.

On the other side, What’s New, Scooby-Doo? was a modern reboot of the classic mystery-solving cartoon. Airing from 2002 to 2006, it featured the same core gang of Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne, but updated with early-2000s technology like flip phones and laptops.

The show kept the essence of the original show, featuring spooky situations, haunted houses, and villains disguised as ghosts. But it also introduced a new soundtrack, faster pacing, and new storylines that appealed to younger viewers. For Gen Z, this version became the most relatable Scooby-Doo series when they were growing up.

Both shows were recently removed from HBO Max, and there’s no confirmation that they will appear on another streaming service. The decision comes after Warner Bros. Discovery changed its streaming approach. Now that the "HBO" brand is back in the spotlight with Max, there seems to be a stronger focus on content for adults and families rather than children's programming.

Due to this, Courage the Cowardly Dog and What’s New, Scooby-Doo? are among the latest shows to leave the platform. With their agreements expiring, the company chose not to renew either title. At the moment, the only way fans can revisit these Cartoon Network favorites is through physical media, such as DVDs. Streaming options are no longer available.

For longtime fans, this news likely feels like a major loss. These shows were more than just cartoons; they were a big part of growing up in the early 2000s. To many, the removal of these classics is more unsettling than anything they watched on screen. Hopefully, the two Cartoon Network shows will find a home on a new streaming platform soon.
