The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 had quite some changes that made it slightly different from what happened in the game. The show, known for being loyal to the game's story, has made some big changes in its latest episode, Feel Her Love, and has made some major changes in the show when adapting from the game.

In season one, the showrunners, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, decided to give a better backstory to Bill and Frank in the show. For season two, they introduce Gail in the show, a character who was not in the games and is said to be Edgar's widow. It seems they are also going to give us a backstory to Edgar in future episodes.

Hence, there have been minute changes in the show in comparison to the games, but none as drastic as the ones seen in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5.

3 major ways The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 differs from what happened in the game

When it comes to adapting a show from a game, one has to be very careful about each detail. From names to events to costumes, everything has to be close to exact. While the showrunners have been extremely loyal to the game's storyline till now, The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 showed some stark differences.

Dina’s backstory changes

One of the major changes in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 is Dina's backstory. The show reveals that, when she was just a child, Dina lost her mother and sister in a brutal attack. In the aftermath, she took revenge by killing the man responsible.

This part of Dina’s history is quite different in the game. In the game, Dina's mother dies from a brutal attack, but her sister Talia does not. In fact, Talia raised Dina after their mother died. Talia died later in the game due to unknown reasons, but not because of the attack that killed their mother.

Dina joins Ellie at Lakehill Hospital

Another big shift from the game in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 is that Dina goes with Ellie to Lakehill Hospital. In the video game, Ellie makes this dangerous trip on her own, leaving Dina behind at the theater after finding out that she is pregnant. But in the series, Dina insists on joining Ellie despite the risks.

This change gives the two characters more time together on screen in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5. However, eventually, Ellie goes to Lakehill alone, but only after they were attacked and Dina and Jesse had to go back to the theater.

Spores appear for the first time in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 also marks the first time airborne spores are shown in the show. In the video game, spores are a major threat from the very beginning. Characters wear masks to avoid breathing them in.

Up to this point, the show used tendrils to show how the infection spreads. But in this episode, a few WLF members encounter spores in the Lakehill hospital's basement. This detail brings the show closer to the game's version of the infected world.

These three changes help the episode stand apart from the original game. By adding slightly different details, changing who goes where, and bringing in a major element from the game’s world, the show keeps the story fresh while respecting what fans want to see.

The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 5 proves that the series isn’t just a copy of the game; it’s a new way to experience a powerful story without completely derailing from the main plot. Whether you're a fan of the game or are just watching the show, this episode is an interesting one in more ways than one.

New episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 come out on Sundays at 9 pm ET on HBO and Max.
