Netflix has officially begun production on its science fiction series 3 Body Problem Season 2, based on Liu Cixin’s acclaimed “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy. The announcement follows the show’s successful first season, which debuted in March 2024 and spent several weeks atop Netflix’s global charts.

3 Body Problem Season 2, along with a third and final season, was confirmed by Netflix in May 2024. According to the Hungarian National Film Office, filming for both seasons will take place in Hungary and is scheduled from July 8, 2025, through August 2, 2027.

The series will continue to explore the unfolding alien encounter that threatens human survival, expanding its cast and moving deeper into the events of the second book in the trilogy, The Dark Forest. With a new setting, a growing ensemble, and a longer production timeline, Season 2 will aim to resolve several unanswered questions left by the first installment.

"We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion," said the showrunners in an official statement.

3 Body Problem Season 2: Production status and release window

3 Body Problem Season 2 is now in active production in Budapest, Hungary. Netflix confirmed that both the second and third seasons will be shot back-to-back. The filming schedule, running from mid-2025 to mid-2027, indicates that Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2026. This approach aims to streamline visual effects and manage continuity across the two concluding seasons.

This change in location marks a shift from Season 1, which was filmed in the United Kingdom. According to filings and reports, the production’s move to Hungary accommodates larger set requirements and an expanded visual effects pipeline essential to the story’s increased scale.

Story scope and adaptation plans

3 Body Problem Season 2 will adapt the events of The Dark Forest, continuing the storyline from Season 1. The narrative focuses on Earth’s preparation for an alien invasion by the San-Ti civilization, expected in four centuries. The show will explore new plotlines and time jumps consistent with Liu’s source material.

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, the showrunners, stated in interviews that major plot threads will be resolved across Seasons 2 and 3.

"Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us," the creators said in a joint statement.

Benioff also told The Hollywood Reporter that the second season will take the story to a new level:

"The second book is far better than the first, and the third book just completely blew my mind."

The returning cast for 3 Body Problem Season 2 includes Jess Hong (Jin Cheng), Benedict Wong (Da Shi), Eiza González (Auggie Salazar), Jovan Adepo (Saul Durand), Saamer Usmani (Raj Varma), Liam Cunningham (Thomas Wade), Marlo Kelly (Tatiana), Sea Shimooka (Sophon), and Josh Brener (Kent).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Yip and Jordan Sunshine will also appear in new roles. This casting introduces additional characters likely drawn from The Dark Forest, the second novel in Liu Cixin’s trilogy.

Filming Locations and Crew

With production moved to Hungary, Season 2 will be directed by Jeremy Podeswa and Miguel Sapochnik. Both are returning after working on Season 1 and previously collaborated on Game of Thrones. Sapochnik will direct multiple episodes and continue as executive producer.

The production is backed by a large executive team that includes Bernadette Caulfield, Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, Rosamund Pike, and others. Alexander Woo continues his role as co-creator and executive producer, alongside Benioff and Weiss.
