The Witcher, which was first released on Netflix in 2019, has become a global success, telling the story of Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter navigating a world full of danger, magic, and political chaos.
Based on the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, the series has already completed three seasons. Season four is now in post-production and will be released in 2025. The Witcher has been renewed for a fifth and final season, which has already started filming, and Redanian Intelligence has revealed the filming locations for season five.
The 3 filming locations for the show's final season are South Africa, Wales and England.
Where is The Witcher season five being filmed?
As Redanian Intelligence reports, season five of The Witcher has started production in Cape Town, South Africa, a major change from the show's usual filming location in England.
Instead of starting at Longcross Studios, which they have done for the previous seasons, the crew traveled to the southern tip of Africa. As Redanian Intelligence reports, the production has been given the working title 'Complete Chaos', and scenes are set to be filmed in Cape Town until mid-March. After that, filming will return to the UK.
The choice of Cape Town is an exciting one. With its diverse landscape, from mountains to beaches and forests, the region can bring an enhanced look to the world of The Witcher. South Africa’s natural beauty could help depict the untamed wilderness or distant kingdoms from the books.
But that’s not the only location being used this season. Production for The Witcher season five is also back in Wales, a location that has become a favorite for the show’s outdoor scenes. Specifically, the cast and crew have returned to Trefil Quarry and the surrounding area.
Trefil Quarry has already been featured in earlier seasons. In season three, it was used to represent the wild areas near Thanedd Island. Key moments were filmed there, such as Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s brief reunion and emotional goodbye. A memorable scene involving Yennefer’s portal breaking down and her seeing an illusion of Geralt was all shot in this Welsh landscape.
Season four also used Wales for some of its final scenes. Now, with filming for season five underway, Trefil could continue to serve as Thanedd or be the setting for other locations mentioned in the books.
As The Witcher season four nears completion, fans are eager to see Liam Hemsworth step into the role of Geralt of Rivia. He replaces Henry Cavill, who portrayed the character for the first three seasons.

While we don't know much about season five, Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said to Tudum by Netflix:
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,”
He continued:
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
Seasons four and five are being filmed one after the other, allowing the creative team to carry the story through to its end without delay. The final two seasons will adapt the remaining three books in the series, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.
The last two seasons will wrap up the story that began with Geralt’s first monster hunt. An exact date for The Witcher season four's release hasn't been provided, but it will be released sometime in 2025.
