"Kids, let me tell you the story of how I met your mother."

That’s how every episode of How I Met Your Mother begins.

The show follows Ted Mosby, a hopeless romantic, as he tells his kids about his crazy adventures in New York City, all leading up to the moment he met their mom.

Along the way, we meet his best friends: Marshall, his loyal and goofy best friend; Lily, Marshall’s wife and the "glue" of the group; Barney, the suit-wearing, rule-breaking ladies’ man; and Robin, the beautiful reporter Ted can’t stop loving (even when he should).

From wild nights at MacLaren’s Pub to emotional life lessons, How I Met Your Mother is full of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. So grab a drink (preferably a scotch, neat), and let’s relive some of the most heartwarming scenes that still make us cry.

Scenes that stayed with us

1) Barney meets his daughter – "You are the love of my life"

Barney always joked about never settling down, but deep down, he wanted real love. After his marriage to Robin fell apart, he went back to his old ways until he found out one of his ex-girlfriends was pregnant. At first, he didn’t care, but everything changed the moment he held his baby girl for the first time.

With tears in his eyes, he whispered, "You are the love of my life." For a character who spent years avoiding commitment, this was the moment he truly grew up. It showed that even someone like Barney could find pure, unconditional love.

2) Marshall listens to his Dad’s last voicemail – "I Love You"

Marshall’s father, Marvin, was one of the kindest characters on the show. So when he suddenly died from a heart attack, Marshall was crushed. The worst part? He thought their last conversation was about something silly, "Plain food is as*."

But then, Marshall found an old voicemail. At first, it was just static (a pocket dial), but right at the end, his dad’s voice came through: "I love you." That small moment gave Marshall and all of us closure. It was a reminder that even when someone is gone, their love stays with us forever.

3) Ted meets Tracy under the yellow umbrella – "I’ve been looking for you"

For nine seasons, we waited to meet the mother, the woman Ted would marry. And when it finally happened, it was perfect.

Ted was standing in the rain at a train station when he saw Tracy holding his yellow umbrella (the one he had lost years ago). They started talking, joking about who really owned it, and instantly connected. After all the heartbreaks and wrong turns, Ted had finally found her.

Even though the show’s ending was controversial, this moment was magical. It made us believe in fate, love, and happy endings.

And that’s why How I Met Your Mother is more than just a sitcom, it’s a story about friendship, love, and the crazy journey life takes us on. Whether it’s Barney holding his daughter for the first time, Marshall hearing his dad’s voice one last time, or Ted finally standing in the rain with the yellow umbrella, these moments stay with us long after the show ends.

Sure, not every ending is perfect (we’re still not over that finale), but the memories? Legendary.
