The popular American animated sitcom The Simpsons premiered more than three decades ago in 1989. Created by Matt Groening, this satirical series delves into the life of the dysfunctional Simpson family living in the fictional U.S. town of Springfield.
The family consists of the Simpsons couple Homer and Marge, and their children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. Since its debut, this longest-running American animated series has been a cornerstone of pop culture, future predictions, delivering humor, heartfelt moments, and a few bizarre storylines.
Here are the five strangest episodes in The Simpsons that made us go completely bonkers.
Top 5 bizarre episodes from The Simpsons
5) The Joy of Sect (Season 9, Episode 13)
When a cult leader known as 'The Leader' comes to the town of Springfield, the residents, including Homer, become eager to join the Movementarians, a group that believes a spaceship will take them to the utopian planet Blisstonia. The satire in this episode is razor sharp, it pokes fun at religion, mass manipulation, and the dangers of joining a cult. New members are forced to undergo some treatment before being accepted into the cult, however, Marge chooses not to be swayed by the cult's motives and finally escapes.
What makes the episode bizarre yet a fun watch is the never-seen indoctricating technique used by the cult — playing the Batman theme to brainwash its new members.
4) Brick Like Me (Season 25, Episode 20)
Love Legos? Here's a perfect pick for you.
Everything is awesome, different, and confusing in this Lego-style episode. Homer wakes up to find that all of Springfield has turned into Lego bricks. Initially charmed by the safety and simplicity of the new blocky reality, he soon begins experiencing disturbing visions of the real world. The episode cleverly blurs the line between dream and reality, parodying The Lego Movie while diving deep into Homer's fear of change and loss. Its dazzling animation makes it one of the most creatively strange episodes of The Simpsons.
3) The Computer Wore Menace Shoes (Season 12, Episode 6)
After Homer discovers the internet, he creates a blog under the alias Mr X. Initially, he posts Springfield's gossip, but soon he starts to write fake stories/conspiracy theories. Surprisingly, his made-up stories start turning into reality. Things escalate when he is abducted and taken to a mysterious island where people who have too much knowledge are kept. When he reached the island, Homer in Springfield is replaced by a doppelganger with a weird German accent, and he even gets rewarded for his conspiracy theories. Quite weird, isn't it?
2) El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer (The Mysterious Voyage of Homer; Season 8, Episode 9)

No weird list of weird episodes in The Simpsons is complete without the fan favourite fever dream. After drowning several ultra spicy Guatemalan insanity peppers at the chilli cook-off, Homer enters a vivid hallucination zone. His spirit guide? A talking coyote voiced by Johnny Cash. The episode drifts from psychedelic deserts and pyramids to an existential search for his true soulmate.
1) Lisa, The Boy Scout (Season 34, Episode 3)

The episode begins with Lisa joining the Boy Scouts, however, Bart is quite upset with her decision. However, this innocent and slow plot is hijacked by two hackers from the Pseudo Anonymous group who have stolen hundreds of unaired episodes of the popular show, The Simpsons. They demand a ransom of $20 million or they'll air the spoilers ahead of the release.
We then see plenty of unreleased clips that show Lenny was never a real person, Bart time-traveling, and Martin being an undercover cop, Homer building a football field in between a corn farm to attract the ghost of dead players, and Principal Skinner secretly meeting another woman in a motel room. However, when the hackers' faces are revealed and when the FBI is at their door, they use an unreleased Disney character as leverage to escape. In the end, the viewers finally see the Simpsons family reunited again while the hackers (both called Ashley) escape on a scooter. Insane... isn't it?
From strange cult practices to chilli-induced hallucination to communicating through farts, The Simpsons never shied away from the strange and surreal scenarios. That's the brilliance of The Simpsons: Just when you think you have seen it all, it finds a way to surprise you in the weirdest way possible.
