Ned Stark’s execution

As mentioned, Ned Stark is executed after being told by King Joffrey that he will set him free once he agrees that he plotted against the crown and falsely accepts treason in front of the entire public. Joffrey, who is about to marry Sansa Stark, Ned's daughter, uses this event to assert his ultimate rule of violence and power over a practical and righteous voice.

The entire Season 1 of Game of Thrones was built keeping Ned at the center and as a moral compass, only to be later executed by King Joffrey. Ned's image is stained as he confesses to a treason he hasn't committed, yet he still loses his life in front of the public and his family members. This showed us a glimpse of the brutal violence that was going to follow in Westeros.

The Red Wedding

In Season 3, the Red Wedding is held at the Twins, hosted by the Freys. Robb Stark and Talisa visit here and are then massacred, violating guest rights. Guest right ensures that the guest cannot harm the host, and vice versa. However, this violation leads to the couple's death, and the move is condemned across Westeros as this breach is considered a violation against god.

But this came as a major twist because, in just one sequence, the future of the Stark rebellion is erased, proving that strategy and betrayal trump heroism.

The destruction of the Sept of Baelor

By Season 6 of Game of Thrones, Cersei Lannister is not fighting any external enemies but is trapped within King's Landing. She is humiliated and cornered by institutions she believes she could control. Cersei loses control over the Faith Militant when she arms them to weaken the Tyrells. Her public Walk of Atonement strips her of her dignity and the power she had gained. Even Margaery Tyrell begins to outmaneuver her and position herself as someone untouchable.

Therefore, with the destruction of the Sept of Baelor, Cersei confounds her enemies with a single act. She eliminates the Tyrells' power, the Faith Militant, and her political opposition.

Oberyn Martell’s death.

Oberyn Martell is fighting with a well-built man who goes by the name the Mountain in Game of Thrones Season 4. He drinks before the fight when Jaime advises him not to drink, as it can get him killed, and even he wasn't aware that this was going to be his last fight. He fights with the Mountain well and has him fall on the ground; however, all Oberyn wants is for him to confess that he raped his sister and killed her children. He doesn't let him die, and this eventually takes his life.

The Mountain strikes him down and smashes his skull in front of everyone within the last few seconds of the fight.

Shireen Baratheon’s sacrifice

The fight for the throne is at its peak, and that is when Stannis Baratheon is misled by the light of prophecy that he must make a sacrifice for the throne to have the divine power on his side. Stannis lets his young daughter, Shireen Baratheon, burn alive as an offering. This killing becomes shocking as it is more intimate, where the parents of the child see her die, and it's not simply an external force or a battle going on. It's not physical power or rule but pure manipulation and greed.

These were some of the most brutal and shocking plot twists in Game of Thrones that impacted the future course of action.
