Daredevil: Born Again recently premiered with the first of its two episodes. Daredevil: Born Again places its action much after the end of the erstwhile Netflix series and begins in medias res, with Matt Murdock having almost retired and settled into a life practicing law. However, as is the custom with MCU shows and movies, Daredevil: Born Again is replete with references and Easter eggs that allude to both the world of Marvel comics as well as the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here, we take a look at the five Marvel references and Easter eggs hidden in the premiere episodes of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.
What are the 5 Marvel references and easter eggs in Daredevil: Born Again?
1) The appearance of Kristen McDuffie
In a stark reference to Marvel comics, the first half of the Disney+ show presents Matt Murdock working for his own law firm in association with another attorney by the name of Kristen McDuffie. The latter appeared in Marvel comics for the first time back in 2011 and was introduced as an assistant district attorney who worked with Murdock and keenly suspected him of being Daredevil. Interestingly, the two developed a romantic relationship in the comics and even established their own law firm.
2) The TV show BB Report
The BB Report is a TV show that makes occasional appearances on the Disney+ series. It is hosted by BB Urich. It is subsequently revealed that BB Urich is the niece of Ben Urich, a character who made an appearance in the debut season of the erstwhile Daredevil show on Netflix. Ben was tragically killed by Kingpin. This entry serves as a reference to the greater MCU.
3) Heather Glenn
As per the Disney+ show, Heather Glenn is a successful therapist and has also established herself as an author. She meets Matt Murdock for the first time on a coffee date arranged by their mutual friend, Kristen McDuffie. On the other hand, Heath Glenn is an explicit reference to the world of Marvel comics, where she was described as the daughter of an affluent CEO and tragically passed after a period of remarkable romance with Matt Murdock.
4) The Times Square
As the election of Wilson Fisk as the Mayor of New York City is announced, the Disney+ show brings forth an image of Times Square, which, as usual, is adorned with bright lights and innumerable billboards. Among them, two particular billboards stand out to Marvel enthusiasts, serving as Easter eggs reflecting the larger MCU. The first one refers to Rogers! The Musical, a Broadway production featuring Steve Rogers, and the second is an advertisement for Harlem’s Paradise, the nightclub that was owned by Luke Cage himself.
5) Kingpin becomes NYC Mayor
As in the comics, New York crime lord Wilson Fisk successfully cements his position as the new mayor of the city. His rise to power as the chief executive officer of the city's administration was first charted in the Daredevil comics back in 2017. The comics chronicled that he won the election by running on the promise to restore order in the city following an attack by Hydra. He was eventually forced to relinquish his chair when his shady dealings with criminals were brought to the surface.
