The debut season of Doctor Odyssey might have come to an end, but several unresolved questions remain. As of this writing, there's no official confirmation from ABC about the renewal of Doctor Odyssey for a potential second season. However, our five unanswered Doctor Odyssey questions are so important in the narrative that we hope they will be taken up and answered in the subsequent seasons whenever they roll out.

The debut season of the ABC show did a fine job establishing the tone and rhythm of the storyline and introducing the chief characters, such as Captain Robert Massey, Max, Avery, Tristan, etc. Throughout the course of the first season of Doctor Odyssey, Tristan, Avery, and Max often coincided with each other as a throuple. On the other hand, Max and the other crew members were often brought face to face with numerous disasters, including an earthquake, a building collapse, and even a tsunami.

Captain Robert Massey's career ended up hanging in the balance as he denied the corporate request to leave people behind and thus had to step down from his position. Here's everything that you need to know.

What are the 5 unanswered questions from Doctor Odyssey season 1 finale?

1) What will be Captain Massey's ultimate fate?

Captain Massey went against the decision of the corporate overlords when he declined their instructions to leave people behind on the first season of Doctor Odyssey. As a result, his position was taken away from him, and he was ordered to step down. In his place, Monroe was made the interim captain. Although Monroe stated more than once that his position was just permanent and that he would quit his job if he came to know that Massey was quitting, the latter was wise enough to know that Monroe didn't have that kind of leverage with corporate.

Massey understood that despite seeming to be temporary, Monroe's captaincy was permanent. When the entire crew stood behind Massey, the corporate bosses were reluctantly forced to change their minds. However, it's fair to say that they are now closely watching Massey and waiting for him to make a mistake so that they can drive him out.

2) Will Tristan ultimately accept Avery and Max's relationship?

The finale of Doctor Odyssey season one saw Tristan coming to terms with the fact that he and Avery are not destined to be together. This came after Avery admitted that she liked Max more than him. Tristan was initially hurt by Max's supposed betrayal and violation of the bro code, as the two of them are friends, but he eventually accepted Max's apology.

The question remains whether Tristan has truly reconciled his feelings for Avery and let her go in his heart or whether he is just waiting to rebound to her.

3) Will Tristan recover from his alcoholism?

Tristan started out on the ABC show by keeping his alcoholism a secret from everyone in the crew. However, it wasn't long before his secret was out, and Tristan realized to his undoing that he was dependent on alcohol.

Things were further complicated as he was dealing with a setback from Avery and thus took to heavy drinking, which was in turn what caused him to be off-grid the following day. Since alcoholism is quite difficult to beat on your own, it remains to be seen whether Tristan would be able to resist himself from partaking in drinks and whether he would find a supporter in anyone else from the crew.

4) Will Avery go to Medical School?

Avery had maintained throughout Doctor Odyssey that her ultimate goal was to study at medical school. This is also one of the reasons she couldn't determine whether she wanted to be in a relationship with Max, as she thought it could somehow impede her goal of becoming a doctor. By the finale of the show's debut season, it wasn't clear whether Avery was actually going to medical school anytime soon. She did decide to stand behind Massey, suggesting that she might stick around a bit longer.

5) Will the medical crew have any new members?

If Avery really does leave the crew to attend medical school, that would create a vacancy that must be rapidly filled. In this scenario, the new team member would have to quickly adapt to the high-stakes environment and be at the top of their game.

Phillipa Soo speaks about Doctor Odyssey

Actress Phillipa Soo, who plays the character of Avery on the ABC show, recently sat down for an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly. During the course of the interview, Soo was asked about her initial reaction to the love triangle between Avery, Tristan, and Max, to which the actress replied:

"We were all very surprised. There's just a level of storytelling that is ingrained in us in terms of what we expect to see from a love triangle with two men and one woman. This felt modern — it felt modern and complicated in a very sort of human way, especially as the story continues to develop from the moment that they all connected and hooked up and realized that they all had these really deep feelings for each other as coworkers in this very insular environment on the ship. It just left us feeling like there was a lot of room to play with this dynamic and what the potential outcomes could possibly be."

Soo further added:

"And especially as three characters who were very new to this concept, I think that also left room for a lot of interesting conversations for these characters to potentially have. From the jump off, we were just all like, "Okay, let's see how this is going to go." And the reaction has been great. It's been really surprising, and I hope people are enjoying seeing how all of it unfolds. It's been fun to make, so I hope people enjoy watching it."

Doctor Odyssey is exclusively available on ABC.
