Keep reading to learn more about the five most controversial scenes and storylines from the HBO show.
1) The Red Wedding
The audience at large and especially those among them who weren't familiar with the source material written by George R. R. Martin were virtually shocked by the entire episode of the Red Wedding. The sequence itself was abhorrent and especially gory, leading many long-time members of the audience to quit watching the show. Over the years, the brutal fate meted out to Talisa, Robb's wife, has been etched as a particularly controversial moment from Game of Thrones.
2) Jon Snow's Return From The Dead
Game of Thrones portrayed Jon Snow's death towards the conclusion of its fifth season. However, he was soon brought back to life. Nevertheless, this consequently led to a lessening of the show's gravity as many couldn't digest the resurgence of an already dead character. It didn't matter much that the death and return from the dead were already penned down in the book series and were backed by the author.
3) Ed Sheeran's surprise appearance
The popular music icon appeared out of nowhere in a surprise cameo and left many shocked. When Arya Stark chanced upon a crew of Lannister soldiers carousing around the fire at the Riverlands, Sheeran appeared in a brief cameo that would have otherwise gone unnoticed but for his music fans. It might not be as shocking as the other entries in this list, but Sheeran's appearance on the HBO show sure felt out of place, and some would even argue that it did stick out like a sore thumb.
4) Arya Killing The Night King
Arya almost effortlessly slaying the Night King with her Valyrian Steel dagger did much damage to Jon Snow's eventual character arc and prevented him from coming to a fitting conclusion in terms of his character. While fans of Arya Stark celebrated this feat, this development shut the door on the possibility of an epic confrontation between Snow and the Night King on Game of Thrones.
5) Bran Stark's Coronation as the King
Finally, the HBO show somehow made the dumbfounded decision to have the most uninteresting and tone-deaf character crowned as the king of Westeros. This led to widespread criticism of the show's conclusion that still lives on to this day, chiefly owing to the fact that his coronation as the king remained unjustified at best.
