Who would have thought that a public school in Philadelphia is thе place where one of the most sincere slow-burn romances in television takes place? Abbott Elementary is not only a source of laughter but also a provider of Janine and Gregory, an extremely realistic couple whose every glance, delay and awkward laugh is absolutely genuine.

The journey of support, respect, growth and timing that Abbott Elementary created not only resulted in the pairing of Janine and Gregory over the seasons but also in the love story of Janine and Gregory from a few likes in Season 1 to their being publicly paired in Season 4.

Moreover, Abbott Elementary really has shown through its characters Janine and Gregory that they are simply the ones for each other. Their story remained slow, steady, hesitant and very human; it was not quickened or idealized. The seasons have made their love story progress through the five major seasons of showing how chemistry transforms into companionship, and friendship into something real.

Here are 5 times that Abbott Elementary proved Janine and Gregory were meant to be

1. “New Tech” (Season 1, Episode 3)

The interaction between Janine and Gregory stole the show in Abbott Elementary’s early days, even when romance was not the center of the plot. The episode “New Tech” is the point where everything starts to happen in a very subtle way.

The strait-laced substitute teacher and the eternally optimistic idealist slowly find their rhythms colliding and eventually complementing each other. This episode was the earliest indicator of attraction. Their differences will not be a source of conflict but rather a source of assistance: Janine's exuberance will lessen Gregory's strictness while Gregory's aloofness will keep Janine's enthusiasm in check.

It is not flirting yet, but undoubtedly it is the start of a bond that can turn into something greater. The creators of Abbott Elementary cleverly used this quiet scene to indicate that at some point, the two would matter a lot not only to each other in the classrooms but also to each other out of the classrooms.

2. “Teacher Conference” (Season 2, Episode 16)

As soon as “Teacher Conference” was presented, the audience was almost screaming for something to happen. And indeed it did! During a teacher’s conference, which was not organized by the school, Janine and Gregory started to tell each other their thoughts and feelings. This private, vulnerable conversation finally results in their first kiss.

The kiss is a sign of shared feelings but it still does not change their status to be a couple instantly and that is what characterizes it as Abbott Elementary. The two people understand that the time for them to be together might not be right yet, their emotional lives are still difficult to manage and that going too fast might destroy what they have created.

It is a very unusual occasion in the world of television where there is complete honesty and restraint, but this is a situation everyone supports as it is realistic.

3. “Franklin Institute” (Season 2 Finale)

If “Teacher Conference” ignited the fire, “Franklin Institute” revealed the way both dealt with the consequences. Janine and Gregory are obviously in love with one another, but, on the other hand, they are also fully aware that life and the right moment do not always work out in favor of love.

Although this episode is not always recognized as the principal relationship threshold, it is nevertheless significant for what it symbolizes: inner emotional maturity. Gregory makes the decision to remain at Abbott, and this decision is influenced in part by Janine’s presence, while Janine starts to figure out what she really wants for herself.

It is not so much a romantic step forward as an emotional pause, evidence that character development is as important to Abbott Elementary as love.

4. “Party” (Season 3 Finale)

The Season 3 finale “Party” at last serves fans the reward that they have been longing for and every second of the waiting time has been worth it. While Janine’s end-of-year party is going on, Janine and Gregory share another deep moment, which leads to another kiss, this time not a shy one. It’s a kiss that is mutual, intentional and bold.

It is not only the kiss that is special, but also the surrounding circumstances. They are no longer the same people. Gregory has become more open and emotionally expressive and Janine has acquired the skill of being patient and appreciating stability. Their romance does not develop because of the pressure from the audience; it grows only when they are finally prepared.

This episode is still being pointed out as one of the most emotionally satisfying of Abbott Elementary, not due to its loudness, but because it has been deserved.

5. “Back to School” (Season 4 Premiere)

The opening of Season 4 with “Back to School” finally gives us a glimpse of Janine and Gregory as an official couple. However, their cohabitation with all the rest of the teachers, especially at Abbott Elementary, is not an easy task.

It’s both cute and realistic, from side glances in the staff meeting room to HR awkwardly coming into the picture. The fun is light, but it also emphasizes the core that has always kept their link strong, companionship based on admiration.

Instead of creating tension out of their love, the series considers it a growth process. They continue as friends, mentors, and colleagues who are simply in love with each other. This is a strong signal that Abbott Elementary is capable of creating such relationships in its writing that are real and not ostentatious.

With Abbott Elementary, love is depicted as lasting and subtler rather than dying out. Janine and Gregory's bond has shown that compatibility is made of mutual esteem, patience and timing. Their relationship has been a gradual development from the first hint of attraction in "New Tech" to their official couple status in "Party."

The genius of Abbott Elementary consists in treating love as a part of life, which is real, unpredictable, slow, and always worth waiting for. Through awkward hall glances or sincere late-night discussions, Janine and Gregory signify that the best love stories are those that take a long time to blossom.

Ultimately, Abbott Elementary not only said but also, through each of the five times it did so, with every glance, every halt, and every moment perfectly imperfect, showed us that they were meant to be.
